Addiction to prescription drugs isn’t anything new but the world is waking up to a drug threat that’s been making waves. Called OxyNEO, the drug is an opioid and though it’s effective in relieving pain, has been known to make it difficult for users to stop. So dangerous is this drug that Canada has stopped the sale of OxyContin (an earlier version of OxyNEO). Of course, the name change will do little to alter the scenario but it’s likely that the country will take even more stringent measures to stem the flow. There have been many prescription drug overdose stories which may just increase. Canadian health officials are estimating that once the sale of OxyContin is stopped, addicts will fall into serious withdrawals, causing a health epidemic. At the rate things are moving, we’re likely to see addicts succumbing to Oxy overdose at a fast rate. Timely intervention is the key to stemming the trend. Pharmacists and doctors should be made aware of what’s going on so that they can prescribe the drug more moderately. What’s on everyone’s mind is that Oxy addicts may move on to hard drugs like heroin and cocaine once the drug goes off the market. If they move onto using drugs intravenously, the problem will increase even further. Doctors and medical practitioners are now being made aware of the dangers of the drug so addicts have resorted to buying it on the black market which has reached the shores of Canada too. The fast growth is cause for concern as addiction to oxycodone is a recent phenomenon. At this rate, it won’t be long before the epidemic stretches its tentacles all across the globe. While OxyNEO consists of almost the same composition as OxyContin, we may see fewer Oxy overdoses if claims are to be believed. According to the company behind the drug, OxyNEO will be made in such a way that will make it difficult for people to tamper with the drug. That includes opening, chewing, crushing or dissolving the contents of the pill. It is hoped that the number of prescription drug overdose stories will reduce in time as efforts are made to contain Oxy overdose instances.
