Risk assessment courses are available for a range of businesses, be it an office, factory or construction site. By being more aware of what to look for, the risk of injury and illness can be avoided, if not completely eliminated.
A risk assessment is carried out to ascertain the hazards and other possible safety issues within a workplace. Once these have been identified, appropriate safety measures can be put in place to reduce or eliminate the risk of an accident taking place. Such safety measures can take the form of provision of equipment, clothing or having regulations in place.
The Importance Of Risk Assessment
It is within a workers' rights to make sure that they can function safely within their working environment. Therefore, it is an employer's responsibility to ensure that this is possible by carrying out a thorough risk assessment. Such an assessment ensures that all appropriate measures have been put in place to minimize or prevent injury or illness.
For a business, if an employee injures himself or falls ill this can be very costly. This applies not only in extreme cases where a company could be taken to court but also in terms of machinery damage or an increase in insurance. It is, in fact, a legal requirement that risk assessment be carried out to control such hazards. The law recognizes that all risks cannot be eliminated. However, it stipulates that workers should be protected as much as is reasonably possible.
Conducting A Risk Assessment
With the proper training, it is possible for a company to conduct their own risk assessment. Most businesses are aware of the main hazards present within their workplace and should put in place appropriate measures and make sure that the right precautions are taken. You do not have to be proficient in health and safety to carry out a risk assessment but you must know how to carry it out.
A risk assessment should be carried out:
* on a regular basis;
* if it is felt that the last assessment is no longer applicable;
* if the way in which work is carried out has been altered in some way
* or if health monitoring has deemed it necessary.
