When it comes to being the owner of your house, you can no longer call up your landlord to help you deal with plumbing issues- so it is high time you learn how to handle those issues yourself.

If you are dealing with leaky faucets, a clogged pipe, or low water pressure, make sure that you address the situation immediately. Leaving these issues unchecked can cause them to grow and become an even bigger problem for you.

Roger Wakefield, plumbing company owner, podcaster, and social media personality, believes that it is important for homeowners to empower themselves with basic plumbing knowledge to avoid major catastrophes. Through his YouTube channel, he has provided all kinds of tips and tricks to make things easier for homeowners to maintain the plumbing in their homes.

So if you too would want to solve plumbing problems before seeking out a professional plumber's expertise, we will be sharing some of Roger Wakefield's tips on how to manage your plumbing issues on your own efficiently.

Locating the Water Main

When confronted with a plumbing problem, most people try to temper the pipes on the spot. The complication that arises with this course of action is that your main water supply is still running, so if you mess around with the pipes, you will end up flooding your house up with water and ruin your property in the process.

Roger suggests that the first thing you need to do is close the water supply entering your house. Every house should have a valve that you can shut off for the main water line. Usually, you would find them in places such as near your water heater, basement, outside your house, or even under the kitchen sink. Shutting off the main water supply will ensure that no taps or appliances can leak water when working on fixing your plumbing problems.

Multipurpose Plunger

Plungers are your biggest ally's when it comes to dealing with clogged up plumbing drains in your house. Depending on the type of plunger you are using- a common cup plunger or a flange one for the toilet, you can efficiently unclog overflowing sinks, toilets, and tubs.

When your sinks or bathtubs are clogged, make sure that you seal up any overflowing holes before you start to unclog them. After that, you need to ensure that there is adequate water inside the basin- not too much and not too little. Whether you are plunging a sink, a toilet, or a bathtub, make use of a tight seal and then start plunging up and down vertically. Usually around ten to twenty seconds is enough to successfully get rid of the blockage in your drain.

Leaking Taps

Leaking in taps, or faucets, is usually caused by damage to the washer or cartridge. So the first thing you need to do is get yourself a replacement for it at your choice of a hardware store. After closing off the main water supply, remove the plastic insert with the help of a wrench and cloth and unscrew the value to fix in the replacement washer. Once it has been done, rearrange all the parts back together and slowly open your main water supply to check out if it is functioning correctly. Always double check for leaks!

These are just a few of the tips that we have learned from Roger Wakefield, on his YouTube channel, he ensures that he goes into the depth of every plumbing cause and effect situation and guides his viewers on how they can effectively repair most plumbing problems themselves.
