Pimples are often a cause of annoyance and diminished confidence among teenagers. Acne breakouts are worse because they are more difficult to deal with and it may take years to get rid of them completely. However, these are nothing compared to a bad case of rosacea.

Rosacea is a skin disease that unfortunately takes root in the face. It is characterized by redness and swelling of the skin, along with a bad case of acne. If left alone, the affected skin may grow coarse and thick. Very visible, uneven bumps will also appear even if there are no actual pimples. The problem is even dermatologists themselves cannot pinpoint the actual cause of rosacea—only that it is brought about by the swelling of the blood vessels beneath the skin. What triggers that swelling is another story. It is often different for each patient, but some of the common ones are the shifting of temperature from hot to cold and vice versa, sunlight exposure, wind, stress, hot flashes for menopausal women, alcohol, and certain foods among others.

It is easy to see how rosacea can reduce one’s self-confidence to shreds. It’s also understandable why people afflicted with this disease will want to get it treated immediately.

The most obvious course of action here is to visit a skin centre and inquire about their rosacea treatment packages. Understand though that treatment for this disease is mostly for relieving the patient of the pain and discomfort of rosacea because it actually cannot be completely cured. Skin centres and dermatologists will be able to administer topical treatments and prescribe oral medications though that can minimize inflammation and reduce acne outbreak. It may take several sessions depending on how severe the condition is. If for some reason the treatment can’t be done by sessions, the patient may be allowed to simply take daily doses of the prescribed medicine or apply the recommended product.

Rosacea treatment may also include oral intake of antibiotics. They are for the sudden flares which get triggered every now and then. Facial creams and moisturizers will help keep the skin from feeling dry and tight, which will be an added pain considering that the flares may already make the surface swollen and painful. As for the bumpy, coarse and thickened skin, plastic surgery may be the best solution.

Treatment of rosacea alone will not improve matters. It is also important for patients to make a habit of taking care of their skin properly especially in their condition. They should avoid activities that will expose them to the sun for long hours. They should avoid drinking since alcohol is, as mentioned above, often a trigger for flares. Most importantly, they should be observant and identify their triggers so that they can avoid them in the future.

It is often said though that when it comes to health problems, the best way to treat an illness is to deal with the root of it all; and in this case it is the inflammation of the blood vessels just beneath the skin. These treatments will unfortunately bring temporary relief only. For those who want longer-term relief from rosacea, skin laser may help not only in reducing the redness but also in preventing the inflammation from getting worse during the next breakout.
