One of the reasons that beginner triathletes believe they can't do a triathlon is because they don't like one of the three sports. Maybe you've are not a skillful swimmer, or you the notion of biking makes you cringe. Or maybe you're like me and you hate running. No matter how hard you practice, your legs just can't go any quicker than a slow saunter. And when it comes to the inclines, your "jog" turns into a hobble. This is a collective problem that frustrates many beginner triathletes. As a beginner triathlete, if you are not talented in one or more of the activities, don't let that scare you from doing a triathlon! Many beginner triathletes agree that one of the reasons why they do a triathlon is because it's a obstacle. Tests make us more resilient and illustrate to us that we can do more than we ever dreamed was possible. So, if you're a beginner triathlete and you’re not a good runner, or you just think it's tedious, we have some motivation to get you training for your first triathlon. First and foremost, it is imperatice for a beginner triathlete to reframe their beliefs about running. If you persist in thinking about how much you hate it, then it will be an unpleasant task and and you will dread training, thus making your first triathlon a bad experience. As a beginner triathlete, set a good foundation for yourself and change running from a miserable experience into a challenge. Remember, running is cheaper than therapy, so spend your training time as a time to relax from your day or to process your thoughts. Most of the time, for the beginner triathlete , the hardest part of the run is just going outside, or moving yourself to the gym. When the idea pops into your head to go for a run, act on it. If you keep not thinking about it then it won't get completed. It's really a mental struggle. If you put your mind to it, your body will go along with it. And finally, as a beginner triathlete, it is good to have reasonable goals. My goal is often to run just one step further each day. Yes, only one step. When you make progress, no matter how insignificant it may look, it motivates you and amps up your confidence. By running one step further then you did yesterday, you will be increasing your distance slowly but surely and before you recogonize it, you won't feel like a beginner triathlete anymore! So, as you commence training for your first triathlon, no matter if you like running or don't like it, just get out there and run one step further each day... and watch your confidence soar!
