The growth of international trade can be attributed largely to container transportation. A steel shipping container is at the heart of this business and has contributed to a tremendous boost in the international trade which has taken place in the last few years. In the past it has been a real challenge in exchanging goods and services all over the world but with the help of steel containers it has become extremely convenient to ship a bulk of goods to any imaginable place in this world and that too in half the time. Over time containers have adopted international standards which have also widely contributed to the increasing numbers of steel containers also known as standardized containers. A steel shipping container is extremely strong, hardy, safe and secure which is made from the best quality steel. An aid is required in the form of a truck or crane in order to port these containers. However, constant exposure to sea air which is rich in salts that can hasten the process of rusting which would otherwise be a slower and natural process depending on the life of the container. Rust may be considered as a serious problem to a steel shipping container and its life at sea. Many cargo containers are parked at port sites for months together where they are exposed to the natural sea elements. An old formulaic method of preventing rust has always been painting which also gets worn off due to the constant movement of the steel shipping containers from one port to another. That too, this happens at an earlier point of time in their life cycle. The paint ensures that steel shipping containers are prepared to load and unload cargo and also moving them on to ships, railcars and stacking of containers can scrape the paint from the top and sides. When a steel shipping container gets damaged due to transit and movement or the risk of exposing metal to harsh conditions, it results in rusting. It is important to check the points of contact from the sides, top and bottom when they are stacked together. When objects make contact with other objects such as the floor, walls, corners they tend to get damaged more easily. However, it is not impossible to treat rust as there are many modes of treatment available. There are also preventive measures that can be undertaken. Once the container is exposed to extreme wear and tear it should be used for storage rather than on long sea freight journeys which may lead to deterioration of the containers. As it is a heavy investment that has to be recovered steel shipping containers must be protected proactively. Now days a steel shipping container is being insulated to provide air circulation and it can also be fitted with electrical insulations to regulate the temperature of the steel shipping containers. This is a very important process especially while transporting goods that are perishable and when the distances are quite long.
