Sales assessment is a term which most people are unfamiliar with. It’s very important that business people and organizations are aware of sales assessment so that they can use it for their benefit. This article will familiarize you with what sales assessment actually is, why it is necessary for your company and how can you actually conduct a sales assessment.
When we talk about sales assessment and what it actually is, in simple words we can say that it is an assessment of how your sales people are actually performing and this performance is then measured against a benchmark set by the firm. It’s actually a development process that allows the organization to assess the skills and capabilities of its sales team and determine if there are any skills that need to be developed or if there is a problem in the effectiveness of a team. The sales assessment allow the organization to get hold of important data that it can use for its benefit by understanding the needs of its sales team and then working on developing these needs so that a good sales team is working for the business.
Now we move on to discussing why sales assessment tests are needed by any organization. Sales are the life-blood of any business. If there are no sales, there is no business; it’s as simple as that. So an organization has to make sure that there are good people representing it in the market. If a sales person is able to sell a product and ensure customer loyalty to the company, the sales person is a keeper. If not, there needs to be a sales assessment to determine what skills the sales person lacks and then work on them individually. Notice how we say individually? Before, it was normal to put everyone in a training center and learn about sales skill through training. What these training programs forgot to focus on was that not everyone has the same deficits in skills and not everyone needs to develop the same kind of skill. Individual sales assessments are needed and individual development has to take place. You need to give the individuals the development that is precisely needed. These development needs can accurately be determined by sales assessment tests which is what makes them so necessary for every business that is operating and wants to figure out how to gain more share in the market.
Now how exactly do the sales assessment tests take place? Well, there are different tests and you can hire an outside company to carry out these tests for you. But generally you’ll see that these tests focus on gathering information about the sales people of your company by putting them through some activities which are critically evaluated. Some of these activities include customer calls, meetings, assessing their behavior in different sales situations, demonstration of the sales people’s most prized skills. All of this is planned on taking place in a very live environment at times, while others take place in a controlled environment.
The results of the test are first assessed and then calculated. Then, the results are given out and feedback is distributed amongst the staff to convey their results. If the need is felt, one on one sessions and coaching does take place to help in the development of skills and getting rid of any negative behaviors or attitudes.
Many people look upon these tests very suspiciously, viewing it as an opportunity of losing their jobs. It’s the management’s duty to convey the importance of these tests and how they are meant to simply improve the sales team rather than get them fired from the job.
