How many times have you been heard that a person is saved when they believe in Jesus? In church we often learn that Christian salvation happens when and because someone believes in Jesus. Is this really true? While most Christians probably hold to the idea that a person is saved when they believe in Jesus, there are others who hold to the idea that something more than faith is required. In other words, you must believe and have some sort of good works in order for you sins to be forgiven. So, what's the truth? Who is right? Well, you may be surprised to hear me say that both are wrong? Don't tune out yet, let me explain. First, we need to ask the question, "What is salvation?" Well, salvation is not having your sins forgiven so you can go to heaven when you die. Rather, salvation is a process that starts with you sins being forgiven and ends at the resurrection. In the Book of Romans, Paul speaks of the idea of justification. Justification is the event where your sins are forgiven. Paul teaches us that justification is 100% by faith alone. When people talk about salvation, they are normally referring to justification. Justification is by faith, completely apart from any works. If one continues a study in Romans, we find that Paul goes on to teach about something called sanctification. Sanctification is the process we are in today (if you believe in Jesus). This is the process of becoming more and more like Christ. We are still sinners, but are lives are being changed. Finally, our salvation is complete when we experience something called glorification. Glorification happens when we are resurrected like Jesus Christ was resurrected. At that time, we will be perfect just a Jesus Christ is perfect. At that time, our salvation will be complete. So, the teaching that our sins are forgiven based on faith alone is 100% correct. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. However, to be theologically accurate, our sins being forgiven is just the beginning of our salvation. We still await the completion of our salvation.
