Hi, I'm an everyday forty two-year-old man from the UK and similar to the vast majority of men in the UK I spend a small fortune yearly on shaving equipment.
However I lately found an effective course of that is not only pleasant but it can save you money shaving too. Presently I am saving over one hundred pounds a in 12 months on shaving and quite a lot of my time too. It is so simple you will most likely kick your self if you find out how! So I need to share this technique with you, not only to avoid wasting your self cash, but to make a every day chore a speedy process (and no, I'm not going to tell you to stop shaving!)
As you understand shaving is just about unavoidable unless you're a woman or have a beard, so you most likely wouldn't be reading this article in the first place unless you are an everyday shaver. This text is directed at men of course nevertheless there is no reason why the process can't be utilised by ladies too!
When I Started Shaving
As a young man I used an electrical razor my mom and dad bought me for Christmas. Sadly it didn't seem to shave close enough and as I recollect it gave me a rash on my neck too. So I decided to start out shaving utilizing Gillette razors and shaving foam which seemed to work very properly, I think that's all that was accessible besides the horsehair brush and soap.
The Razors I've Tried
I've also tried disposable razors at one point, in an effort to save some cash, which was a terrible mistake! I appeared as if I had fallen face first in a thorn bush, then when I put tissue paper on the cuts I seemed like something from a horror movie.
A few years ago I remember a work colleague who came to work with a little bit of tissue on the tip of his nose, how he managed to cut his nose shaving I have no idea however it was hilarious.
I have additionally used Wilkinson Sword for a couple of years too, but I eventually switched back to Gillette razors because they had the edge (ok, bad joke) and I've stuck with Gillette ever since.
Once I tried a razor that you get with a travelling bag as part of a Christmas or birthday gift. You know the ones, you get a deodorant after-shave and moisturiser that all smell the same and a razor that looks cheaper than a disposable. I took one stroke and decided to stop because I did not fancy a skin graft thanks very much. I feel they need to be accompanied by a " Hazardous" sticker and health warning!
Don't Purchase Low cost Shaving Foam
I remember at one time I purchased some low-cost shaving foam and what a mistake that was! Utterly useless! Using soap and water would have been better! Then I found shaving gel, which I must say is much easier than foam and I feel it lasts much longer too. I've used Gillette shaving gel for a really long time however then I found a gel that seemed to work even better, known as Nivea for Men Sensitive Shaving Gel. The foam from the gel was thicker and left my skin very smooth afterwards, what would you expect, after all Nivea are the skin experts.
A Visit to the Barbers in China
Whilst on a trip to Nanning in China, the airport safety personnel took my shaving gel from me that I'd bought particularly for the journey, despite the fact that it was smaller than the maximum 125ml that was permitted on the flight at that time. They found it in my hand luggage so it is a good idea to pack them in your main luggage if you are considering of flying to your destination.
I had gone with out shaving for about three days when my spouse recommended I try a neighborhood barber; I thought to myself "why not I've never been to a barber in the past". The barber had me lie down then put a warm towel over my beard for a couple of minutes. After removing the towel he got me to sit up and put some soap to my face with small horsehair brush. He sharpened his cutthroat blade and walked at me with it. I'd only seen cutthroat blades in the old movies and I had completely forgotten barbers used cutthroat blades, I thought they might be using something else by now. I have to say it's quite intimidating having a cutthroat blade going for your neck from a complete stranger that does not speak a word of English. Lots of mad thoughts go through your mind, like what if he slipped? Or I coughed? Or what if he did not like foreigners? He took a few strokes then sharpened his blade, once more took just a few more strokes then sharpened it once more then proceeded to shave me. Then I had to lie down again and he put a hot towel over my face again before he sat me up and repeated the process. I have to say it was slightly painful however I could not say a lot as a result of he didn't speak a word| of English and I didn't know any Chinese language, Mandarin, but I think he knew by the expressions on my face that it was painful. After a while he appeared to have finished, much to my relief! I washed off the soap and dried my face. As we paid the barber he mentioned something to my wife in Chinese language, Mandarin then she started laughing. I asked my wife what was so funny, she told me said he'd never shaved a foreigner in the past and apologised for taking so much time, mt wife also told me he'd only managed to shave half my face properly. I had thought he'd finished the other side a bit quickly. To be honest that was one thing I do not want to try again in a hurry.
The Little Blue Strip
If you are presently using Gillette you could have noticedseen the little blue strip close to the blades called the glide strip, that is to remind you that it is advisable to change your blades, well my blue strip has gone months ago and the soap underneath it has virtually gone too. Why should you must throw away a perfectly good razor blade if it's still sharp? And to be honest with you I have not seen any difference when shaving without it either. I feel it is only a clever little way for Gillette {to make more money|to make morern cash|to earn more money} from us.
My Eureka Moment
Nevertheless the trip to the barber got me thinking. I was purchasing new Gillette blades every few weeks and they aren't the cheapest of things either. I did not wish to change to a different brand once more because the Gillette blades work very effectively, nor did I want even use disposable razors once more and I certainly wasn't going to attempt a cutthroat blade! I assumed it was not possible to sharpen razor blades but I've read on a website referred to as
www.hackcollege.com that you would be able to rescue them by running your blades up and down the leg of an old pair of jeans about 20 times each way (like shaving the wrong way round). Nonetheless I have never tried this myself yet.
I thought to mysel "If only there was a way to make my blades last longer."
There is not anything amazing about the way I shave these days, I just know that I make my blades last quite a bit longer and it works very nicely for me. In reality I might use my Gillette blade for about 5-6 months easily. When I finally change the razor blade (which is, by the way, still fairly sharp) I simply use the previous blade to shave my head (I'm going bald you see).
Here's what I do, I don't moisten my face first, I simply apply some Nivia shaving gel on to the parts I want to shave. I am going to leave it on for a few minutes while I brush my teeth, then by the point I've finished brushing my teeth the hair will have softened prepared for shaving. I put some hot water in the sink then apply just a few drops of water to each side of my face, massage it in till it is soapy once more (by this time most of the foam could have gone depending on how much gel was used). Now I go ahead and shave, I are inclined to go towards the grain, but simply shave as you usually do. Remember to rinse your blade every few strokes to keep the blades unclogged, do not bash the blades against the side like I used to do, I believe this puts the blades out of line. After I've finished shaving I use the shaving soap that is remaining to wash my face, quickly rinse my face and there you go! You'll be able to brush your teeth, shave and wash your face all in about 5 minutes.
And another good tip for you: have you ever observed while you let the water out of the sink all the hair sticks to the side of the sink and it's a nightmare to wash? All you must do is swirl the water to make a mini whirlpool while the water goes down the plughole, this makes a lot of the hair go to the side|then do one swirl to the outside this makes it go to the center of the water and due to this fact it goes down the plughole. You'll be able to simply rinse away any stragglers left over.
I hope you liked my little tales and hope you can take away something useful about saving some money shaving. If you live in the UK and you want to learn how to save money in other ways try this web site
