Women’s tennis is easily the most popular and profitable women’s professional sport in the world. According to a recent survey, tennis fans prefer it to the men’s game by a margin of 2 to 1! It is also one of the few sports were women are compensated as well as the men. In fact, they are actually paid more!

Because they play a best-of-three sets matches at the major tournaments and guys contend best-of-fives, females players often earn more per hour. While the men still rule the proverbial roost when it comes to endorsement dollars, the girls aren’t far behind. Female tennis star Maria Sharapova earned $25 million on endorsement deals last year, making her the highest paid female athlete on earth. It wasn’t always this way, of course.

When the game was invented in England in the early 1870s, women took an immediate liking to it. Tennis was a civil, graceful, and proper game that they could enjoy with their husbands, brothers, and male suitors. It was also one of the only active sports that they were permitted to play. Before this time, high-born women played croquet or golf.

Competition

At the time the first professional tennis tournament was held, women were banned from most professional sports. They had been keep out the Olympics for thousands of years and were discouraged from participating in games that were considered too active or too rough. As a genteel game, the patriarchy had mixed emotions about tennis. They did not mind female participation, just not at the highest levels.

When the first major tennis tournament was held at Wimbledon, London, in 1877, women were kept out. But with dogged determination and persistence, these early players finally got their way. In 1884, the first generation of female tennis players took the court at the All England Club and competed alongside the men. All of the other major tournaments of the day, including the French Open and the U.S. Open followed suit.

Fashion

After they got their proverbial feet in the door, the most pressing conce
for female players was probably their attire. Because women did not play active sports before this time, there was no such thing as ladies tennis pants. They had to compete in long dresses with hemlines that nearly reached the ground. Not to mention the fact that they were not permitted to play in outfits that revealed even a bit of skin below the waist. That meant no short sleeves, no ladies tennis pants, and no low necklines. It was not until the Roaring Twenties that styles and fashions finally started to change.

With a growing fan base and increased participation, athletic clothing makers finally started making tennis wear for women. To increase range of motion and comfort, many designers removed the sleeves and raised the hemlines. A few years later, female players exchanged their ladies tennis pants for skirts.

Where are we now?

As we mentioned at the outset, women’s tennis is the most popular women’s professional sport. Tennis wear is sold at most sporting goods stores and pro shops. However, these establishments almost always overcharge their customers for ladies tennis outerwear, especially at the pro shops, where they have a captive audience.

One easy and reliable way to save a chunk of change is to order women’s tennis wear on the internet. There are many reputable sportswear sellers that cater specifically to female athletes. Deep discounts on merchandise and shipping are not hard to find if you look online.
