According to the American Dental Association, dental disease is almost entirely preventable. The most important factor in preventing dental disease is regularly visiting a dentist. If there is anxiety in visiting a dentist, then sedation dentistry may help a patient to feel more relaxed. A relaxed patient is more likely to visit the dentist regularly and to have a better dental experience.

The practice of sedation dentistry works by prescribing sedatives like Triazolam, or other Valium derivatives, which are known for a numbing and slight amnesiac effect. Sedatives are taken a few hours beforehand to allow the desired effects to kick in immediately preceding the dental procedure. Sedation dentistry usually involves invasive surgery, extractions, root canals, or other procedures which can be stressful for a patient. Nowadays most dental procedures can involve the use of sedatives depending on the treatment needs as well as the past experiences of the patient.

Restorative and replacement dentistry is the process of treating damaged teeth and returning it to a more aesthetically pleasing state. Restoration usually involves different procedures, and can involve the use of sedatives. Some of the more popular restoration methods are:

  1. Fillings Teeth: that have minor decay in them may be cleaned and then filled with a durable material to replace the decayed portion. Patients do not have to worry because a dentist in North Carolina uses only the best type of fillings to restore teeth.
  2. Bonding: Is the act of replacing chipped portions of a patient’s tooth, and is both aesthetically pleasing and fully functional.
  3. Veneers for teeth: This involves the placement of a thin layer of synthetic material to cover the face of the tooth to protect it from further decay and/or to cover up unsightly gaps, discolorations or cavities. Veneers for teeth are a very popular alternative to fillings. Teeth look better when veneers are used rather than fillings, which is undoubtedly why it is so popular.
  4. Crowns for teeth: this type of dental procedure requires the total housing of damaged teeth. A synthetic tooth basically replaces the damaged tooth’s exterior. Crowns for teeth can be a painful procedure so sedatives are often recommended for the patient.
  5. Whitening: Regardless of the fact that slightly yellow colored teeth are stronger, a lot of individuals prefer pearly white teeth, much like those advertised on television. North Carolina dentistry practices have kept pace with the latest technology in whitening such as UV light, fluoride treatment, etc.
  6. Gingivitis: An inflammation of the gums that can cause bad breath, severe discomfort, bleeding and dark stains. The treatment of gingivitis has received a modern approach via surgical and non surgical procedures to remove excess gum tissue or treat inflamed areas via surgery, oral medication, and topical applications.

The above-mentioned dental procedures only provide a glimpse of the modernization that North Carolina dentistry has undergone for the advancement of dental hygiene. For a more complete picture of how a dentist in NC can assist with oral health maintenance, it would be best to go personally consult a dentist.
