The word schizophrenia comes from the Greek word skhizein meaning "to split" and the Greek word Phrenos (phren) meaning "diaphragm, heart, mind". It is a mental disorder that generally appears in early adulthood or late adolescence - however, it can emerge at any time in life. It is one of the brain diseases that may include delusions, agitation, and loss of personality (flat affect), social withdrawal, psychosis, confusion and bizarre behavior.

The disorder in many cases develops so slowly that the sufferer does not know he/she has it for a long time. While, in other cases it can strike suddenly and develop fast. It is a severe, complex, chronic, and disabling brain disorder and affects approximately 1% of all adults globally. Experts say schizophrenia is presumably many illnesses masquerading as one.
Research indicates that it is likely to be the result of faulty neuronal development in the brain of the fetus, which emerges as a full-blown illness later in life. Our brain consists of billions of nerve cells. Each nerve cell has branches. They receive and give out messages to other nerve cells. Neurotransmitters - types of chemicals are released at the end of these cells. These neurotransmitters carry messages from the endings of one nerve cell to the nerve cell body of another. This messaging system does not work properly in the brain of a person who has schizophrenia.
What are the signs and symptoms of it?
There is no physical or laboratory test that can absolutely diagnose it. A psychiatrist, the doctor will make a diagnosis based on the patient's clinical symptoms.
The symptoms can be like:
• Movement disorders
• Problems with memory, attention and organization
• Unusual perceptions or thoughts
• Difficulty expressing emotion and speaking
Physical testing can however, rule out some other disorders and conditions which sometimes have similar symptoms, such as brain tumor, seizure disorders, thyroid dysfunction, drug use, and metabolic disorders.

Paranoid symptoms may include:
• Arguing or anger
• Anxiety
• False beliefs
Disorganized symptoms may include:
• Showing little emotion
• Childlike behavior
• Problems explaining and thinking
Catatonic symptoms may include:
• Other odd expressions on the face or grimacing
• Lack of activity
• Rigid muscles and posture
• Not responding much to other people
