Second largest city in Assam - Jorhat

Jorhat is placed nearly 300 km away from Guwahati, which is the second largest city of Assam. The name Jorhat derived from uniting of two words ‘Jor’ that means ‘two’ and ‘Hat’ means ‘market’. The name seeded from the 18th century with the existence of two markets - Macharhat and Chowkihat, which were situated on other sides of the Bhagdoi River.

Jorhat is also known for its tea plantations. It also has the oldest tea Research Centre in the world in the form of the Tocklai Research Association. The city of Jorhat is oftentimes mentioned as ‘the cultural capital of Assam’ because of the prevailing cultural varieties in the area.
