Stay Healthy This Winter with These Simple Secrets
The holidays are coming up fast… and so is the season of winter misery. There’s nothing like a runny nose, sore throat, and congestion to take all the fun out of your holidays.
But a few simple tricks can cut your risk of missing the family get-togethers, parties, and other events that make the holidays so much fun. Even when your co-workers, friends and family members go down for the count.
The first trick is to start now, before trouble hits. Though it’s controversial, the evidence shows vitami
C may help you bounce back from winter ills faster. But only if you’re taking it regularly before the sniffles hit.1 Taking 1,000 mg twice a day will give you extra immune support.
Several studies – using larger doses of vitami
C – suggest it may help promote shorter, less uncomfortable bouts of congestion and runny nose, too.
In one study, researchers gave people 1,000 mg of vitami
C each hour for 6 hours when they first began feeling sick. After that, the volunteers took 1,000 mg 3 times a day.
They reported 85% less stuffiness and discomfort than volunteers who took no extra vitami
C.2
The evidence for zinc is even stronger than for vitami
C.
A brand-new review found clear evidence it helps. The study team found that zinc promotes shorter and less severe bouts… and that people taking zinc supplements tend to be sick less often than those who don’t.3
Be careful with zinc supplements, though. Taking large doses – 50 mg or more per day – can hinder your body’s ability to absorb copper. So be careful about the amount of zinc you’re taking.
Beating winter illness isn’t al modern science. You can also support your body’s natural defenses with an ancient remedy.
There aren’t a lot of studies on garlic, but the results we do have are impressive. English scientists gave garlic to 73 volunteers for 12 weeks during the winter. This group got sick only a third as often as a similar group not taking garlic. And when they did get sick, they felt better in just a day-and-a-half on average!4
There are other ways to cut your risk of being sick this holiday season, too. For example, a study in The American journal of Medicine reported on a group of women who slashed the number of times they got sick over the winter by two-thirds.
They did it by… walking.
That’s right. These women walked at a moderate pace for 45 minutes, 5 days a week. Within a year, they were getting sick less than 1/3 as often as non-walkers.5
And here’s an even easier trick. Just get a good night’s sleep.
A team at Carnegie Mellon University found sleep makes a big difference. In their study, people who averaged less than 7 hours of sleep a night were 3 times more likely to be sick than those who slept 8 or more hours!6
If you have trouble getting to sleep, a natural sleep aid containing melatonin, valerian and/or hops might be your ticket to far fewer rounds of winter sniffles this holiday season.
Finally, during the winter season, wash your hands regularly.
The bugs that cause most common winter ills are usually passed from hand-to-hand… or from an object to your hand. Studies show simply washing your hands on a regular basis can cut your risk of getting sick up to 44%.7
Put all these tricks together, and you may even sail through the holiday season without missing a single day.
Imagine how nice that would be!
Stay Healthy,
Dr Kenneth Woliner, M.D.

Moving Meditation: How Precision-Based Exercise Supports Mental and Emotional Growth
Movement is one of the most honest forms of self-connection. The body never lies. It holds stress, records emotion, and reveals when something feels off. For many, this is why exercise has always been more than fitness; itâs therapy through motion. But not all movement heals. Some styles exhaust, others distract. True healing often begins in the slow, intentional kind, the kind that lets the body lead and the mind follow.rnThatâs where precision-based training, such as re
