Seek Not Your Own

“Love does not seek its own interest.”
This is the best meaning that love could bear. Love is never self-centered, but selfless. It transcends self and seeks others.

Research the favorite music, movies, and hobbies of your spouse. Be ready to discuss them. Constantly ask other interests and preferences of your spouse. It is important because people constantly change. Your spouse might be different today and before. Study their favorite food, colors, clothes, TV shows, books, drinks, travel, things, etc. Know also the people dear to your spouse. You will know more of your spouse through his/her friends, family, and colleagues.

Do not just understand. Support and join your spouse of his/her favorites. Act on them! Take your spouse to his/her favorite concert or event. It would be best if you join him/her. Accompany your spouse in concerts, even if you do not like the concert. Buy his/her favorite book. Better if you read the book before handing it to your spouse.

a, I know a couple who bought each other a book. One will read the book halfway. He/she will share what he/she read and hands the half-read book to his/her spouse. The spouse will finish the book and likewise shares what she read to his/her spouse.

b, Once a week, prepare your spouse of his/her favorite food and drink too. Buy your spouse his/her favorite things, but not on special occasions. Take your spouse to an unscheduled travel.

Learn to like your spouse’s favorites. You do not have to make their favorites your favorites too. You just have to learn to appreciate and enjoy them too with your spouse. It is better however that they become your favorites too.

The process of learning your spouse’s interest can eventually make you a better person. If your spouse loves playing piano and you do not, learning piano will be an added skill. If you were impatient, you would be patient if your spouse were patient. The whole learning process is the process of making two people one, which marriage is all about. Learning would be easy if you consider it as a fun way of growing. So, go and seek not your own interest and love selflessly.
