If you often struggle in your personal and professional relationships, it may be due to lack of self-confidence. Negative self-perception can be a vicious cycle. When you lack self-confidence, you believe that every falling out with a friend or rejection from a love interest is because there is something fundamentally wrong with you. This only reinforces your negative self-perception and causes continued problems in your life. So how do you break the cycle?

What is Self-Confidence?

Self-confidence is a positive view of one’s power, judgment, intelligence, and place in the world. This feeling may also extend to the perception of one’s social charisma, physical characteristics, and talents. Basically, someone with self-confidence feels good about him or herself.

Pitfalls of Negative Self Perception

The pitfalls of a negative self-perception are almost limitless. People with low self-esteem do not feel confident in their abilities or place in the world. They may walk with their heads down, be too timid to speak up or engage in conversation, or believe they are simply not talented or attractive enough to get ahead.

When a person’s self-perception becomes too negative, he or she may become depressed, withdrawn from others, and may engage in self-harming behaviors such as cutting, drinking, doing drugs, and getting into verbal or physical altercations.

People with a negative perception of themselves are at increased risk for anxiety disorders, clinical depression, and suicidal tendencies. Low self-esteem may also contribute to the development of autoimmune and gastrointestinal disorders.

How to Boost Self-Confidence

It’s easy for people with a positive self-image to tell you to just “get over it” and “hold you head up high” but it’s easier said than done. The primary basis for low self-esteem is negative self-talk. You may not even be aware of how many negative thoughts you have on a daily basis.

Try listening to your thoughts. Do you think of yourself as fat and ugly each time you see your reflection the mirror? When you get passed over for a promotion at work, do you automatically think you’re a loser? If love interests don’t return your affection, do you believe it’s because you’re just not attractive or good enough to find romance?

The first step to improving self-confidence is changing this self-talk from negative to positive. First, get a pen and paper and write at least 5 things you like about yourself. It could be anything. Do you have nice hair, good fashion sense, a head for numbers, a kind heart? Think about those things you like best about yourself and focus on them throughout the day. The more you focus on the good, the more good you’ll find.

You can also eliminate and reverse negative self-talk by using mantras. Mantras are statements you use to counteract the tendency to think negatively. For example, “I am a good person”, “I have success in my life”, “I’m healthy and happy.” Yes, you’re going to feel silly doing it at first for a while but it works.

Use Self-Confidence to Improve Relationships

When you have confidence in yourself, your entire life improves as do your personal and professional relationships.

1. Business Relationships

Employees who show confidence in their abilities to perform on the job enjoy more business success. They are able to get along with the co-workers and be a team player and will often be the first to get a promotion.

2. Friendships

Good friendships take work and if you have a negative self-perception, you may wonder why your friends even like you. Shying away from friends can be taken the wrong way. Your friends may not think that you lack confidence; they may believe there is something wrong with them!

3. Family Relationships

Family relationships can be among the most difficult to maintain, especially if past hurts or traumas get in the way. Childhood trauma is a common cause of poor self-esteem. When you gain confidence in yourself and your abilities as an adult, you will be more successful in healing old wounds and establishing yourself in healthy family relationships.

4. Dating

Men and women who lack confidence in themselves avoid the dating scene or have trouble in it. Confidence is a natural attractant that tells potential romantic partners that you have something to offer in a love relationship. The more confident you are in yourself, the better your romantic life.

When you have confidence in yourself, you not only improve your relationships, you gain improved physical and mental health as well. Get started with positive self-talk today. You’ll be amazed at the results.
