The internet can be a blessing and a curse. In my opinion, one of the reasons it can be a curse is because, through the game of Internet Dating, it feeds off some people's deep rooted need to be loved. Sometimes, this desire for love leads people to make decisions that are not the wisest choice(s) pertaining to their safety. I believe that people should attempt to listen to their "inner voice" - that part people refer to as their "intuition" and/or their "gut feeling". I have always tried to listen to my sixth sense as I like to call it but sometimes I can be stubborn.
The first example that comes to mind is when a regular at the bar I worked at asked me out after work. This guy came in every Sunday afternoon to watch the football games and this led to building a false sense of security by thinking we were "friends" simply because we spoke every Sunday in between quarters and when business was slow. We established a friendship over a two month period of "seeing" each other in this fashion.
There was one week where I'd worked too many hours so I got off work early. He requested I join him at the bar. However, my manager strolled by and informed me that was against company policy, so we changed locations. When the game was over, he suggested we go shoot pool. I agreed since I love to shoot pool. So, we decide to carpool and he offers to drive. I hear an all too familiar voice exclaiming "Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!!!" However, being that I was in a really good mood and didn't have to work the next day, I chose to tune the voice out.
Thus within a couple of minutes, we are in his car heading towards a pool hall about a mile away. Imagine my surprise when he turns onto the entrance ramp onto the expressway. I ask where he's going and he informs me that we're heading to South Beach where there's a really nice place. I decide to sit back since there's not much I can do now. Turns out the place has closed and I state that I'm tired and ask to be taken back to my car suggesting we leave this for another night.
As we're getting back to my car, he exits the expressway and begins to drive in the opposite direction. The voice inside my head begins to yell: "hello? Anyone home? Where are we going?" I asked him to stop the car and let me out and when he wouldn't but, instead, began to slow down to turn down a secluded side street, I thought "okay, enough!" and threw off my seat belt, opened the door and practiced my "tuck and roll" procedure as I jumped out of the car. I ended up walking to my car while continuously apologizing to my sixth sense for not having listened to it.
