Movies have plenty of images where self-talk is prelude to closure of a deal. There’s the salesman who tells himself he’s a god before meeting clients. There’s the motivational speaker who grins back at herself in the mirror to overcome presentation jitters. And there’s the nerd who deliberately fixes his posture into one of a “player” in order to muster the nerve to ask someone on a date.

And while Hollywood mostly chooses to mock those who deliberately psyche themselves up, there’s merit to giving yourself extra boost to get a task done. You may not know it, but already through self-talk you’re practicing a bit of self-hypnosis. If you want to do better than how you’re currently doing, then why not invest in self-hypnosis all the way and jump through all the hoops?

If you’re a skeptic, there’s only one thing that you need to know: it works! Almost every news site has a story about individuals who overcame odds in the face of extreme adversity. The reality is, we’re all functioning far below our real potential, and it may take deliberate effort, such as self-hypnosis, to trigger what’s lurking behind the surface. Self-hypnosis can remove every negative attitude you have about your abilities, and transform it into a message of “I can!” Self-hypnosis can silence all the distractions and noises in your head, and channel all your energies towards your goals. Self-hypnosis can make you feel good about yourself, which in turn will help you attract all the positive vibes in the universe.

STEP ONE: FIXATE

The first step in self-hypnosis is fixation: focusing your conscious attention on an object in order to drown out distracting information.

What can you fixate on? An object in the far distance, such as a vase or a painting is a good start. You can begin the fixation step by deliberately taking note of every detail in what you’re looking at, e.g. the intricate pattern of flowers in the vase, or the direction of the artists’ paint brush stroke. Some find that they can focus better by looking at a lighted candle or a black dot in a blank sheet of paper. Or you may simply close your eyes, and think of a random object (think of it as like the “totem” concept in the movie Inception). There are no hard and fast rules to fixation; the important thing is that you’re actively channeling your focus in only one direction.

STEP TWO: RELAX

Once you are focused, you can now begin to induce your mind and body into a state of total relaxation. There are many techniques to do this; one of the most popular is through PMR or Progressive Muscle Relaxation. In this technique, you go to each part of your body, perhaps starting from your toes making your way up to your head, and tell each body part to simply
“relax, relax, and relax.”

STEP THREE: INVOKE YOUR SCRIPT

The last step in self-hypnosis for success is to repeat your chosen “script” over and over again. Your script represents the attitude or idea that you want to learn and master. For instance, the popular Coue Method advises people to always affirm themselves by saying “I am getting better and better every day.” Og Magdino has an amazing book titled “The Greatest Salesman in the World,” where he shares ten personal development scripts in the form of “legendary scrolls.” But you can also create a personal script based on your personality and unique needs.
