SEO or Search Engine Optimization is an internet marketing field that features a significant amount of often-misunderstood industry jargon. In fact, many people confuse SEO with SEM, SMO or SMM, even though each of these acronyms refers to a completely different marketing strategy. Understanding the differences is crucial for businesses seeking to improve their traffic and conversions because ranking competition is happening right now. If you're not capitalizing on what these four tactics can bring to your company's table, then it's likely that you're missing out on the lion's share of your markets and niches. Search Engine Optimization or SEO SEO consists of a comprehensive set of strategies designed to increase a website's ranking in search results for keywords their customers are actively searching for. Search Engine Results Pages or SERPs generally deliver most of the worldwide traffic for a particular term to the websites in the top three positions on the first page. SEO can be used to organically rank a site as high as possible by utilizing powerful backlinking strategies, various submissions and syndication processes, blogging, document sharing, video posting, on-page and off-page optimization and much more. Search Engine Marketing or SEM Where search engine optimization works by increasing a web page's ranking organically, search engine marketing essentially buys ranking. Whenever a search engine returns results for a keyword or keyphrase, there are organic results and there are paid ads that are relevant to the search. Businesses can pay for traffic and ranking by outbidding other business to "get the click" when an internet user types in search terms related to the business's products or services. Social Media Optimization or SMO SMO is somewhat like SEO, but for social media like Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and many others. Social Media Optimization refers to the process of creating and managing profiles on social media sites and optimizing those profiles by interacting directly with consumers and networking with others in your field or industry. This strategy is critical for branding purposes, but it also adds to an SEO campaign because SMO creates links back to your site when you post content, share a link or take some other action. Social Media Marketing or SMM Social Media Marketing uses social media platforms to advertise. This can be done in the form of advertisements on social media websites that are displayed based on consumer affiliations and interests. SMM can also be used to deliver special messages or make offers to certain markets. By increasing a "fan" base, companies can use their profile walls or other similar public formats to create valuable content that drives readers and interested parties to an offer while encouraging them to share the content with their own friends or fans. This is viral marketing at its very highest level. In order to dominate your markets and propel your website to the top of the SERPs, a holistic approach must be utilized that encompasses unique aspects of SEO, SEM, SMO and SMM. However, because these are complicated strategies that can affect the way your business is perceived by both search engines and consumers, you should consult with an expert prior to launching any campaign that you don’t have previous experience with.
