When you learn to sew, one of the first things you realize is you will need a good sewing machine. But where do you find sewing machines for beginners? What kind should you buy? Should you get a simple one? Should you get a complicated one that has lots of stitches? Should it be super expensive? Should you spend as little as possible? One of the first things you want to consider is what are you going to be sewing? Likely you will be learning to make a quilt or simple clothing construction. For either of these types of projects, you will only need two stitch types; straight line and zigzag. All machines will have these two stitches. So when choosing a new machine, you don't need to buy one that has hundreds of stitches. For quite a while you will only be using only these two simple stitches. If you choose a machine that has only a handful of stitches, you will not be overwhelmed when your new machine arrives. Another feature to consider is the reputation of the manufacturer. There are lots of machine companies out there. You can use the internet to help you find which companies are reputable. Buyers will tell you what they really think in these reviews. Read through several. You are looking for the companies that have repeatedly have favorable reviews. Another resource to turn to is comparison charts. Many websites and even manufacturers will have comparison charts of features of sewing machines. This will give you a side-by-side comparison of features and benefits of particularly sewing machines. Once you have narrowed down what basic features you need, these charts will help you sift through dozens of models to find the models that have what you need. It is important that you not buy a machine with dozens of features that you won't use for several years. These may simply be overwhelming to you. If you feel overwhelmed, you will be hesitant to use your new machine. Choose a simple machine so that you feel eager to sit down to the machine and easily use it. When looking for a simple machine, also look for simple accessories. Many models will offer dozens of presser feet and other accessories. When you are first learning to sew, you only need one all-purpose presser foot to start. Later you may want to add other feet that are made for special purposes such as inserting a zipper, or sewing a perfect quarter-inch seam as required in quilt construction. But for now, a simple all-purpose foot is all that is required as you learn to sew. When looking at sewing machines for beginners, take these different tips in mind. You will be able to find several models of machines that will make an excellent tool for you when you are learning to sew.
