Many women (and men) worry about having sex during pregnancy, but the good news is that it is perfectly safe – so go for it. Is it safe? Remember that your baby is cushioned by a sac of fluid well beyond the neck of the womb and your partner’s penis can’t penetrate beyond your vagina so, even if it might feel strange, having sex is perfectly safe. To put your mind at rest, the NHS advises that there is no medical evidence to suggest that sex during pregnancy does any harm to the baby. You might be able to notice some mild contractions after sex but they won’t be powerful enough to trigger labour if your body is not ready. Some women might notice their babies moving around more after an orgasm – this is likely due to the spasms or the increased blood flow giving her a boost of oxygen and nutrients. Positives It is important to maintain a healthy and loving relationship with your partner throughout your pregnancy and many couples even find that their sex life improves. For women, higher levels of oestrogen and progesterone can mean their breasts and vagina are more easily stimulated, making sex during pregnancy more enjoyable. It can be an ideal opportunity to try new positions and to enjoy sex without the worry of contraception. Third trimester Having sex during pregnancy can help prepare your body for labour if you are in the final stages of your third trimester and can even help get labour started. Semen contains prostaglandins which can help to soften the cervix, while nipple stimulation can release hormones that encourage the womb to contract. By the third trimester, many women find it difficult to lie on their backs and it can feel awkward having sex in this position, especially if it puts pressure on the bump and breasts. It may be better to try lying on your sides, either facing each other or with your partner behind where there is no pressure at all on your bump. If you are feeling energetic, try sex with the woman on top, lifting yourself off your partner’s stomach while supporting yourself on squatting legs to prevent pressure on your tummy and breasts. The risks Talk to your GP or midwife if you are classed as a high-risk pregnancy. They might advise you not to have sex at certain stages of your pregnancy if there is a history of miscarriage or premature labour, or if you have a low-lying placenta or have had heavy bleeding in pregnancy. If you have any bleeding after sex tell your midwife or doctor.
