These thoughts are extracted from (and are a brief summary of what I feel to be the main points of) the classic bookn'The Richest Man in Babylon' by George S. Clason (Publisher Penguin Books (USA)). I've written this piece in point form from notes that I've taken - for brevity. Where the masculine word 'men' is used in these ancient writings, please substitute "and women".n(as they are often more sensible and cautious on financial matters than the male of the species!)

'THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON' by George S. Clason

The success secrets of the ancients, an assured road to happiness and prosperity - 'the most inspiring book on wealth ever written'. Like the law of gravity, these principles of financial success are universal and unchanging.

'Lo, money is plentiful for those who understand the simple rules of its acquisition.'

THE FIVE LAWS OF GOLD

I. Gold cometh gladly and in increasing quantity to any man who will put by not less than one-tenth of his earnings to create an estate for his future and that of his family.

II. Gold laboureth diligently and contentedly for the wise owner who finds for it profitable employment, multiplying even as the flocks of the field. Good luck can be enticed by accepting opportunity.

III. Gold clingeth to the protection of the cautious owner who invests it under the advice of men wise in its handling.

IV. Gold slippeth away from the man who invests it in businesses or purposes with which he is familiar, or which are not approved by those skilled in its keep.

V. Gold flees the man who would force it to impossible earnings or who followeth the alluring advice of tricksters and schemers, or who trust it to his own inexperience and romantic desires in investment.n *

THE TEN STEPS TO WEALTH (RICHES)

Everything starts with DESIRE. So, if that's what you really want, have a great desire for wealth, as in the strength of thine own desires lies a magic power - the ability to achieve them. Where the determination is, the way can be found.

1. Fill yourself with the thought of 'starting thy purse to fattening'. Develop a 'wealth consciousness' or mindset. Then have a PLAN to achieve your wealth goals. ("It is the plan that hath made my success").

2. Control thy expenditures. Better a little caution than a greater regret.

3. Make thy gold multiply. "A man's wealth is not in the coins he carries in his purse; it is the income he buildeth, the golden stream that continually floweth into his purse and keep it always bulging. That is what every man desireth.'

4. Guard thy treasures from loss. We cannot afford to be without adequate protection, so be fully protected with insurance (life and general).

5. Make of thy dwelling a profitable investment. (Time to paint then, Craig)

6. Insure a future income.

7. Increase thy ability to earn (by looking for opportunities). Every problem can be an opportunity to do something new.

8. Repay all debt as soon as possible. This is vital to achieving financial independence.

9. PAY YOURSELF FIRST from your pay-packet. A PART OF ALL YOU EARN IS YOURS TO KEEP
'A part of all I earn is for me to keep' ('put in 10 coins, but spend only 9, ie. put aside at least 10 of your income for a 'rainy day'. As you see your money growing fast, this will further stimulate, motivate and encourage you. A new joy of life will thrill you.
