\The Importance Using A Shielded Cable In today's day and age, we depend on electronic devices so that we can better perform our various functions. However, we often neglect to think about the various cords and cables that they have. Understanding the different types of electronic cables, including a shielded ones, is an important aspect of maintaining these often expensive devices. There are many advantages and different types out there today that you can select to best provide you with the needs and longevity specific to your device. What is Cable Shielding? One the first things that you will need to know is the difference between shielding and insulation. Cable insulation is a practice of putting a protective coating over that does not carry a current. This is useful for protecting the integrity of the cable and ensuring that over time the cable will be protected from abrasion. However, cable insulation does not protect the cable from electromagnetic interference, nor does it block electromagnetic waves from leaking outside of it. This is where shielded cables come in handy. A shielded type is built with a thin layer of metal tubing surrounding the cable wires. This layer of tubing helps prevent any type of electromagnetic radiation from exiting the cable or entering it. This is particularly helpful when you have many cables near each other. Electromagnetic radiation and interference can disturb the signal quality that a cable should have. What Are The Different Types Of Cable Shielding? Now that you understand what a shielded type is, it is important to understand the many different types of shields that are available. Some of the most flexible types of shielding is served shields. These shields are used in many different audio cables because they are so flexible. However they are also relatively inductive compared to other cables. Another type of cable shielding is braided shields. As you can imagine, shielding fibers are interwoven amongst themselves in a very tight manner. This type of shielding can cover up to 95% of all the electromagnetic radiation. However, along with this type of shielding, the level of flexibility is often quite low. If you're looking for the most coverage of electromagnetic radiation, then you should go for a solid shield. These types of shielded cables provide absolutely 100% resistance. These are made by having a metal tube that is fairly rigid be placed surrounding the cable, allowing for no type of radiation to pass through. These cables are great if you need absolutely zero interference from other electromagnetic devices. However, as you can imagine, these types of cables are rigid and are not good for flexible options. Different Factors In Shielded Cable Effectiveness No matter what your shield is built out of, there are many different factors that will affect its effectiveness. When you select a shield, you will need to anticipate the amount of electromagnetic radiation in the area where the cable will go. Many times the shielding will be able to absorb the electromagnetic radiation allowing for the less effective, yet more flexible, shields to be placed below them. Learning about the different types of shielded cables will help you to be better educated when making a cable purchase decision. Likewise, it will help you to know how you can best maintain your cables and avoid electromagnetic radiation.
