Generally, whenever a computer user buys a brand new laptop not much though is usually given to their future requirements. The laptop purchased may finish up not being fast enough or not having enough storage capacity.

Consideration is given to some of the limited upgrades that could be applied to the typical laptop.

The upgradeability of any make and model of laptop is fairly dependant upon the manufacturer's design, some are almost not upgradeable at all whereas others could possibly be upgraded almost as much as a desktop computer.

Usually the hard disk drive can be upgraded; it is normally located inside a door on the unde
eath of your laptop or slides into the edge of case. Usually, you can remove the old drive and easily insert a larger unit, however, be careful to use the correct type of hard drive as the interface varies. A number of laptops and a lot of netbooks use a solid state hard disk drive, this often can't be easily upgraded since this is either part of the motherboard or is incredibly hard to get to inside the laptop.

Adding additional RAM into a laptop will often be the simplest upgrade that could be done to a laptop. Most laptops use a small door on their underside through which extra RAM might be added, however, some manufactures require that the keyboard or complete case is removed to get to the RAM socket or sockets. Care needs to be taken to buy and insert precisely the correct type and speed of RAM chip as there have been many design changes over the years.

You may want to increase the core speed of the laptop by upgrading the CPU chip, however, this isn't usually a simple job. The chip is often located deep inside the laptop so the only way to get to it is to deconstruct the laptop to access the motherboard. Occasionally, the original CPU will be soldered onto the laptop motherboard so making an upgrade nearly impossible.

The video card can on occasion be upgraded on certain models of laptop but they are always very expensive and require careful fitting. So generally if you require a more powerful video chip then it may be cost effective to buy a brand new laptop.

You may wish to upgrade the WI-FI card to a faster unit. This is often usually quiet simple and affordable, however, some manufacturers ensure it is very challenging to locate the existing card often putting it below the keyboard.

Think very carefully and do your research before purchasing a laptop as upgrades are always expensive and are not always possible for many makes and models. Laptops are normaly more upgradeable than netbooks though if you require full upgradeability then maybe a desktop pcshould be considered.
