It seems like everyone has a website these days, but if you are a small business, do you really need one? Even if you are a local mom and pop shop, and are getting plenty of business (some small businesses claim they are too busy), there are still a number of benefits for you and for your customer. If you are not getting the business you need or want, are thinking of expanding or are a start up business, than creating a website is essential. While the primary benefit of having a website is that it will increase awareness and hopefully the amount of sales or how much business you get, there are many reasons any small business should have a site:

1. Tell them about you – Seems pretty obvious, but along with simply notifying potential customers of your existence, hopefully getting some leads, bringing people to your shop or making a sale, a website can actually make your business more efficient. Today more people look for information online than anywhere else. If you don’t have a website how much time are you or your employees spending on the phone answering questions like what times your open, or things about your product? You can make all of the vital information available to anyone, anywhere in the world 24/7, leaving you and your employees with more time for more vital tasks.
2. Less expensive than traditional advertising – Traditional advertising like billboards, flyers, radio spots and others can get really expensive, and the effectiveness is not always guaranteed. While no one can guarantee the effectiveness of a website either, a couple things are known: 1. It is cheaper than traditional mediums, 2. More people look online for products and services than anywhere else. In addition, a website is more flexible. Your site can be changed at anytime and anyway you like. The same is not true of most traditional advertising, once you send out the flyers they’re gone.
3. Reach outside of your immediate area – People don’t usually go outside of their comfort zone. If you are a business that serves people in your store or shop, the best way to get people in your doors from outside of your immediate area is with a good website. Your website can even offer turn by turn directions.
4. Credibility and reputation – Today people rely more on the internet for reviews and information about the different products and services they are looking for, more so even than friends or family. If you don’t have a website there are likely a large number of people who will never even consider your business.
5. Discover what people think of your business – Feedback is a smart way to discover how you can improve your business, and a website can offer a fast, inexpensive and easy way to get it.
6. Discounts, coupons and promotions – Online is the simplest and least expensive way to promote events or attract customers with discounts.

Any business can benefit from a website, and even more so if you are a small business. Even if you are not excited about expanding your business there are a number of benefits to getting a website.
