A skin tag can pop up on many different places on the body including the armpits, the eyelids and even the groin area where skin folds can commonly be found. If you have just now noticed a tag somewhere on your body you may be a bit freaked out at first and be concerned with what this could mean. If you do have legitimate concerns than do no hesitate to speak with your doctor. Just point the problem out and ask any questions you might have about complications in the future. You will be pleasantly surprised to find that in most cases these skin tags are actually benign and never cause any problems. In some cases, however, they can be in areas that cause irritation but this doesn't mean they are cancerous either. These types of skin issues are caused by the root stalk of a cluster of cells growing on the outside layer of the skin. They are much different in their origins from moles where the group of cells is much flatter in growth. A tag can get rather large but in most cases will not get bigger than the size of a golf ball. Having a tag removed medically is a pretty simple procedure and often doesn't even require the use of anesthetic. The exact procedure and whether or not to use anesthetics will be dependent a lot upon how big the growth is and where it is located, however. A skin tag can show up at just about any time during your life. Some experience them from birth and others don't notice them until they are well into their 60's. They do, however, seem to appear more frequently during middle age. Tags that appears on the face or in areas that will be rubbed by undergarments tend to be the most irritating as well and are sometimes very uncomfortable. It has been mentioned already, but in most cases these things will be benign. By all means, though, still talk to your doctor about any and all concerns you have. After bring this to the attention of a physician you can both talk things out and decided what the next step should be. If your problem is in an area that probably won't have issues with irritation than the doctor will most likely classify this as a cosmetic problem. What this means is that many insurance carriers will not pay to have it removed because it presents no medical problem. When something like this happens it is sometimes better to look for other ways you can get the tag taken off so that you can save money. Removal of these can be done in many different ways and which options you will be able to use will be largely dependent on things like the size and where it is at. You do have options like excision, cauterization, cryosurgery and ligation but also keep in mind there are things that can be done at home as is products you can use without a prescription as well. Thoroughly evaluate all of your possible options before you decide what you should do about this issue. This is even more so important when the tag you have is being classified as cosmetic only and your insurance plan will not cover the removal. Home remedies are much cheaper than a trip to the doctors office and if coverage is an issue here they may be better choice overall to go with anyway.
