So, your wondering if your relationship is worth holding onto? I can understand that sentiment. After all, you invest so much time and energy into a relationship, it can be hard to let go and face the daunting task of starting over again.
Plus, there’s the fact that you probably love your partner too. Can’t all disagreements just be worked out with a little understanding?
Well, first here are a few things to consider:
Is this a chronic problem in your relationship? - If you’ve been having this problem in your relationship for some time now, will getting back together or working through this rough patch do more than just pacify the situation, only to have it erupt again later?
If your relationship is going to stand the test of time, you’re going to need to find ways correct the problem, so that the core issue is taken care of. Otherwise, you’re just biding time until the problem rears its ugly head again and you’re right back where you were to begin with.
What is the overall flavor of your relationship? - If the tone is marked by feelings of resentment, bitterness, and negativity, then there really may not be enough mutual respect between you and your partner to justify continuing the relationship.
Strong relationships are built on a foundation of love and respect for one another. If this is not a key ingredient in your relationship, then what’s holding it together? Desperation? Loneliness? Codependency? None of these are good reasons to stay in a relationship.
Do the Two of You Share a Vision for Your Future? - Successful couples also have dreams together and they grow together as they strive for a common goal. It helps to keep them on the “same team” rather than as possible enemies.
Maybe you and your partner are having trouble because you’ve lost touch with that common dream or because that wasn’t there to begin with. Either way, take the time to consider if you both have compatible dreams and goals in life. If you don’t, then maybe the relationship isn’t meant to be.
Consider these three things when asking yourself if your relationship would be saved or if it’s better to just move on and start over with someone new. Although the temporary loss of a relationship can leave you feeling heartbroken, it is ultimately better than settling for an unfulfilling relationship that seems like more work than reward.
