Should You Worry About the Latest Media Frenzy?
Thanks to the recent outbreak, listeria has been in the headlines for a couple of months. And, in spite of there being just one source – and an effective recall – as I write, we may not have seen the end of it yet.
So, should you be worried? What’s the story with this outbreak? And just why is everyone so upset about a relatively rare form of “food poisoning”? Here’s what you need to know…
Listeria monocytogenes – listeria – is a common bacterium found in soil and water. But it doesn’t often make people sick. Only about 1,600 cases are reported every year.
Compare that to salmonella, which strikes more than 1 million of us annually. Or to norovirus, which makes more than 5.4 millio
Americans sick every year.
Next to those numbers, listeria may seem like small potatoes. But three properties make it a serious concern.
First, unlike most bacteria, listeria can reproduce at low temperatures. If your fridge isn’t set below 40 degrees, listeria can multiply rapidly. An inexpensive thermometer can help you make sure your food is stored at a low enough temperature.
Second, listeria doesn’t necessarily make you sick right away. Most people get sick quickly with flu-like symptoms, and then get better. But the “invasive” form of listeria can take up to six weeks to make you sick. And that brings us to difference #3.
Invasive listeria is very, very serious. Less than .003% of the people who get sick from norovirus die. But listeria carries a death rate of almost 16%. Those at greatest risk are the very young, the very old and anyone with a compromised immune system.
With 116 cases reported, the recent outbreak is the single biggest ever recorded in the U.S. The second biggest outbreak was in 2002, when 54 people became ill.
Those numbers alone should tell you there’s no reason to panic. And the fact that only one farm was involved, should ease your mind even more.
But you can lower your risk even further by following a few simple guidelines.
- Avoid soft cheeses made from unpasteurized milk. Pasteurized soft cheeses should be fine.
- Don’t eat smoked seafood out of the package. Thoroughly cook anything marked as kippered or smoked before eating.
- Reheat leftovers and ready-to-eat foods from the market until they’re steaming hot.
- Don’t buy pre-sliced or cut melon. Wash fruits and vegetables – even melons – with a vegetable brush.
- Clean your fridge frequently, and keep the temperature below 40 degrees.
So, should you be worried? Probably not. Listeria is relatively uncommon. And with a few simple precautions, you’re not likely to become ill.
But should you be careful? Definitely. At best, food-bo
e illnesses are a serious inconvenience. And why take chances when avoiding them can be so easy?
Stay Healthy,

Moving Meditation: How Precision-Based Exercise Supports Mental and Emotional Growth
Movement is one of the most honest forms of self-connection. The body never lies. It holds stress, records emotion, and reveals when something feels off. For many, this is why exercise has always been more than fitness; itâs therapy through motion. But not all movement heals. Some styles exhaust, others distract. True healing often begins in the slow, intentional kind, the kind that lets the body lead and the mind follow.rnThatâs where precision-based training, such as re
