The majority of women who have had a vaginal yeast infection are more likely to have it re-occur. However, some of the luckier ladies have never been accosted with this uncomfortable, sometimes painful condition. There are several tell tale signs of a yeast infection but not every woman will have every symptom.. Keep in mind that this article for informational purposed only. Even women who are yeast infection experts can sometimes mistake one for Vaginitis so consult with your physician if you think you may have it.
Yeast infections are the most common of all vaginal infections. There are several tell tale signs of a yeast infection but not every woman will have every symptom. In fact, if the infection is mild they may not feel much of anything until so much time passes that the infection gets worse. The main symptoms of vaginal yeast infections are as follows:
Vaginal itching. This itching can occur both inside the opening of the vagina and outside. On the outside, it is typically felt around the vaginal opening and the entire vulva.
Vaginal burning. The burning is generally a side effect of the itching. Though it is not recommended to scratch the vagina, this can be very hard to resist when the itching is so intense. If you do give into it, burning may occur; especially during urination. Burning may also be caused by an overwhelmingly large yeast overgrowth.
Vaginal swelling. During a yeast infection, swelling of the vulva is quite common. This is partly due to the infection itself, and partly due to the inflammation caused by scratching.
Unusual vaginal discharge typically occurs with a yeast infection. While vaginal discharge is normal, the kind that accompanies a yeast infection is thick (comparable to a cottage cheese substance) and has a foul odor.
Painful sexual intercourse can also indicate a vaginal yeast infection. However, it can also signal a plethora of other medical problems so if this is your only symptom you should check with your doctor immediately.
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, you may have a vaginal yeast infection. Most women who have had one before will self diagnosis. There are many ways to treat yourself for this type of infection including creams and vaginal inserts. However, most medical professionals discourage their patients from doing a self diagnosis. The reason is that even though you are presenting with classic yeast infection symptoms, it is possible that you may have bacterial Vaginitis, a urinary tract infection or any number of sexually transmitted diseases. Your doctor can rule out all other possibilities by just doing a simple vaginal swab which will yield results within minutes. If it is indeed a yeast infection, you will either be prescribed vaginal cream or a one day pill that helps bring relief and a cure within only 24 hours. If the infection is severe, you may be required to take two pills over the course of two days. The important thing is that the infection gets cured and you can once again be happy and comfortable!
