A recent survey carried out by a UK insurance company showed that as many as 39% of drivers don’t know how to perform even the simplest of safety checks on their vehicles such as measuring the oil level or making sure their tyre are inflated to the right level. And to underline the gender stereotypes when it comes to cars, a massive 80% of the women who responded said they didn’t know how to perform basic safety checks as compared to 36% of the men. But what basic maintenance is it then that these people don’t know? Well, first of all if you look at wheels and tyres, you should regularly check your tyre pressure as the wrong tyre pressure can affect fuel economy, handling and comfort. And with most petrol stations having tyre pressure equipment available, there’s no excuse for not knowing how to do this. A second thing you should check is the belts inside the engine. At the front of the engine there is a series of rubber belts visible. As rubber belts perish, you need to get them changed from time to time. Look out for any fraying and take your vehicle to a garage if you do spot any. Then thirdly make sure to check your oil level. Park on level ground and make sure the engine has cooled down before locating the dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it clean, insert it again and then pull it out to read it. The oil mark should be between the high and low marks on the dipstick. If it’s too low, add some oil bought at a petrol station. You should also be able to check the coolant level yourself and where the coolant reservoir is situated inside your engine will be apparent if you look in your handbook. There should be ‘low’ and ‘high’ markings visible on the outside of the reservoir for you to check. It’s worth noting that in addition to weekly checks of tyre pressure and oil level it’s worth having your car serviced regularly as a garage will pick up all the things you are unable to spot. If you’re car is under warranty it’s probably worth having serviced at your main dealer such asFord servicing, London. That way you’re get original parts if anything needs replacing.
