Goal setting is a very powerful technique that works! At its simplest level the process of setting goals and targets allows you to choose where you want to go in life. By knowing what you want to achieve, you know what you have to concentrate on and improve. Goal setting gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation.
Research has shown that people who use goal setting effectively:
• suffer less from stress and anxiety
• concentrate better
• show more self-confidence
• perform better
• are happier and more satisfied.
Key things to remember when setting goals!

• Anything is possible! We are only restricted by our own minds and our own beliefs!
• Reach for the moon!
• When you have written you goal, make sure you visualize them. Sit quietly and imagine you already have your goal. – Imagine how it looks/ feels/ sounds etc. Picture yourself leading your life after you have achieved you goal.
Setting Goals

a) Pickout the areas you feel you would like to work on. E.g. Health, relationships, finances, family, career, personal development. I would recommend that you start with three goals.

b) Brainstorm on paper what you would like to improve, what you are not happy with etc. Be as honest as possible with yourself.

E.g Emotional Goal
I get stressed easily, not enough time to myself, short fuse, easily get upset, worried what others think, feel guilty, no energy, lack of motivation etc.

c) After you have written down how you feel, the next step is to write down how you would REALLY LIKE IT TO BE!

E.g Emotional Goal

Easily stay calm and relaxed, I don’t worry what people think of me, confident and high self esteem, cope with my reactions and emotions easily, don’t feel guilty about speaking my truth, have plenty of time to relax. I Love life!!!!!!

Example of an Emotional Goal

It’s June 1 2010 and I feel very calm and relaxed. I wake up every morning filled with energy and am filled with motivation to do the tasks in my day. I am filled with confidence and my self-esteem is growing every single day. I deal with every situation in a calm and serene manner. I do not worry about what people think of me as I know I am doing the best I can with the resources I have. I love my life and do not worry about what the future holds. I find it easy to stand up for myself in a loving way. I have firm boundries. I feel safe and happy!

Important things to remember:

  • Write your goal as if it has already happened!
  • Be as specific as possible…we often get what we ask for!
  • Use positive language…write down what you DO want…not what you DON’T want!
  • Read your goal every day for at 30 days - Stick pictures around your goal and smile when you are reading it!

Use affirmations to support you goals. For example:
• I deserve to achieve my goal and I accept it now
• I find it easy to exercise three times a week ( Health Goal)
• I remain calm and relaxed in all situations ( Emotional goal)
• My income is increasing every day ( Financial goal)
• My perfect partner is being drawn to me ( Relationship goal)

If you do not already set goals, or if you have not yet focussed on your life goals, now is a great time to start!
