If ever there were two issues that were high up on a man's list of the medical problems that he never wants to experience, probably the two uppermost in his mind are diseases related to the heart and its blood vessels and the inability to attain and then maintain an erection. That is why looking at simultaneously treating cardiovascular disease and erectile dysfunction -- and a man could have both (this is highly likely) -- can be so important. It is often the case that men who suffer from ED -- which is short for erectile dysfunction -- will in many cases also be suffering from undetected cardiovascular issues such as atherosclerosis, which is more familiarly known as "hardening of the arteries." The problem with such cardiovascular issues is that penile erection is often compromised. This is because certain underlying conditions inherent with cardiovascular issues can lead directly to erectile dysfunction. Generally, this dysfunction is brought on due to lack of effective nitric oxide (NO) production, which is necessary to a male being able to attain and then maintain adequate erection. Now that it is known that something like erectile dysfunction is a direct predictor of possible cardiovascular issues, physicians can go to work treating both problems at the same time. Such things as personal improvement in lifestyle (working to add healthy habits, for example) and the addition of certain vitamins and food additives or supplements, and going on certain therapeutic prescription medications can do a great deal to improve erectile dysfunction and reduce the incidence of issues revolving around cardiovascular problems. As far as lifestyle issues go, it is been found that going on a diet and losing weight along with a gradually-strengthened exercise program holds out great promise in a certain percentage of the male population suffering from something like atherosclerosis and erectile dysfunction. Interestingly a therapy involving improving the ability to sleep deeply and comfortably -- in obese patients -- in order to alleviate the issues involving around what is called "obstructive sleep apnea" has been shown to help a great deal. As far as the kinds of prescription medications that will help to lessen the severity of cardiovascular problems, the use of cholesterol-lowering drugs have not only helped to improve the cardiac problems brought on by cholesterol, obesity and sedentary lifestyle but also have been shown extremely helpful in assisting a mail to overcome the physical deficits which lead to erectile dysfunction when suffering from cardiovascular compromise. Unfortunately, many men automatically assume that they are burdened by some sort of psychological issue that prevents them from achieving erection. Wrongly, they look not only to themselves but also their significant others -- in some sort of attempt at blame -- when it comes to ED. That is why education on the link between cardiovascular issues and erectile dysfunction can go a very long way to reducing problems revolving around both. There are any number of new ways of looking at treating both of these issues, and today's health professionals have proven themselves willing to look at a number of different therapies and medications that may not be directly related to either cardiovascular issues or erectile dysfunction but which have been found to help at least reduce the severity of problems related to ED in conjunction with classic cardio-pharmaceutical medications. In almost every case, a male who is willing to undertake a gradual reconfiguration of his lifestyle -- including quitting smoking, losing weight and engaging in just a small amount of exercise -- may actually get himself to the point where only a small amount of maintenance drugs or even no pharmaceuticals at all will be required. Above all, a male experiencing erectile dysfunction should be frank and open about the issue with his physician and also be aware that in many cases ED is a predictor of cardiovascular problems such as atherosclerosis and other conditions that could have serious long-term complications. Be smart; get checked out by a doctor if an episode of erectile dysfunction occurs more than very occasionally. Helena Ederveen
