As the volume of health and safety legislation continues to increase and becomes more complex the need for substantial training in this area is of paramount importance to managers. Subsequently, and especially within the construction industry, supervisors are being expected to take on more responsibility to assist their site managers. The Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme or SSSTS as it has become affectionately known offers supervisors a clear understanding of their duties under the various sets of legislation. Benefits to business For the construction industry having a clearly defined health and safety policy in place which is successfully active, is vital for marketing and acquiring new business or new tenders. It goes without saying that Principal Contractors will be more willing to appoint a contractor who has these systems in place as it reduces their liabilities. For the business itself there are obvious direct benefits which will result from a health and safety system being successfully managed. Safety Management Systems will reduce the down time and additional uninsured costs that all accidents and cases of occupational ill-health bring, therefore increasing the profitability of the company whilst reducing the risk of litigation and liabilities. Standards and requirements Endorsed by the United Kingdom Contractors Group as the standard training for all supervisors working on UKCG sites this two day course provides supervisors with an understanding of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, as well as their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will highlight the requirement to promote health and safety to supervise effectively. Candidates should be either already in or due to acquire supervisory responsibilities. Certification Once the candidate has completed the course they will receive certification which is valid for 5 years. However as with most courses, there are likely to be continuing changes in legislation, technology, environmental management and cultural behaviour, and so it is therefore recommended that refresher courses are undertaken within 3 years of completing the original course.rnCourse Progression This course is an ideal foundation for obtaining a basic understanding of health and safety duties and responsibilities for junior management and upon successful completion of this course, a natural progression would be the five-day Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course. Existing site managers, agents, surveyors and persons holding positions of managerial control should attend the five-day Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course.
