Although your SAT score may not determine whether or not you get into the college of your choice, it can still be a good indicator of your learning ability for those colleges you are considering. When you’re thinking about your future, it’s worth the extra time you will put into studying. Most students are required to have either an ACT score or an SAT score before they even apply to college, so it’s a good idea to take it as early as possible. Preparing for the SAT doesn’t have to be difficult. It’s a matter of having the right materials and making sure that you’ve set aside enough time to study all the materials you need to know. 1. Schedule Your Test The first step to preparing for your SAT test is to pick a time that is convenient for you to take the test and make sure to register by the deadline. Registering involves paying a fee; so make sure you are prepared to pay it. Pick a time that you feel most confident about your learning. Some people are sluggish in the morning and may do better on an afternoon test. You may get tired after meals and want to take a test before you eat. Factor these things into your decision of when to take the test. 2. Understand The Test Doing well on a test is often as much about understanding how the test works as it is knowing the content. You’ve probably heard of people referred to as good test takers. Those who can grasp the purpose of a test from the beginning and flow with it will likely do better on that test. Chances are good that the questions will be similar, and the format will flow in a convenient way. Take some time before you start studying to review the format of the test and any important details. Take note of multiple-choice sections, fill in the blank and essay questions. The more you know about what to expect from the test, the better you will do. 3. Take Practice Tests It is fairly easy to obtain copies of earlier tests or practice tests that are given. Many earlier editions of a test will be retired and then available for you to practice on. Take the time to complete as many of these tests as you can. This will not only help you with content, but will help you to get into the right flow for the specific test you are taking. Pay attention to the test format when you take practice tests, and try to avoid taking any other test in between your practice time and the actual day you take the SAT. 4. Review Notes Take your class notes from the basic subjects, like math and English, and study them thoroughly. Focus on the sub-groups within these subjects. Any information you retain from the core subjects will help you in all areas of the test. For example, any grammar knowledge you have will help you with your essay writing. Areas of the test will bleed over into each other in this way, and the more you know about the core subjects, the better you will do on your test. 5. Take Mini Tests Practice taking the test in miniature sections. Time yourself the way you would be timed in the actual test taking process, but only take one section at a time. Build yourself up to taking the whole test by taking small tests each day. You can never practice too much, especially with an SAT test. 6. Relax The night before you take your test, review your notes and do a quick study of the information you are concerned about. Don’t kill yourself studying the night before, as you may feel burned out the next morning. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep. Your body and mind will function better if you are not tired. Also, make sure you eat a good breakfast to give your body and mind the energy it needs to remember the information you have locked in your brain. Other Helpful Ideas If you are still worried about your upcoming SAT test, consider hiring a tutor to help you with specific areas. Find a tutor with solid knowledge in the subjects you are concerned about, and set up a regular time to meet with them. The SAT test is not the most important thing you will do in your life, but it is important to your future. Make sure you are adequately prepared to take it and to do well.
