Smartphones are mobile handsets with added features in it. These features make your mobile phone nothing less than a pocket computer. These phones, not only allow you to make and receive phone calls, but also give you freedom of: • Accessing internet, • Browsing important websites, • Get latest news, • Stay connected with your loved ones through social media like facebook, LinkedIn, twitter, etc., • Transfer data to and from computers and other devices, either simply through USB cables or Bluetooth adapters, • User-friendly operating systems, • Multiple connectivity possibilitiesrn • Etc. Your simple mobile phone becomes a Smartphone with the following Key Features: Operating System: A Smartphone has an operating system that allows it to run various applications. For instance, Apple's Smartphone are called - iPhone and it runs on the operating system – iOS. BlackBerry Smartphones run on the BlackBerry OS and other devices run Google's Android OS, HP's web OS, and Microsoft's Windows Phone. Apps: Our basic mobile phones also used to have apps or applications like calendar, alarm clock, stop watch, contact manager, address book, etc. However, the Smartphones have much more advanced application. It allows you to view Microsoft Office documents and few also support ‘create and edit’ functionality. It, may also, allow you to download apps, such as personal and business finance managers, or almost anything you want to. Or it may allow you to edit photos, get driving directions via GPS, and create a playlist of digital tunes. Web Access: More Smartphones can access the Web at higher speeds, thanks to the growth of 4G and 3G data networks, as well as the addition of Wi-Fi support to many handsets. Still, while not all Smartphones offer high-speed Web access, they all offer some sort of access. You can use your Smartphone to browse your favorite sites. QWERTY Keypad: Mostly, Smartphones have QWERTY keypad, i.e. the keys are laid out in the same manner like they would on your computer keyboard and not in alphabetical order on top of a numeric keypad, where you have to tap the number 1 to enter an A, B, or C that we used to have in the old mobile phone models. Also, the keypad could be hardware (physical keys that you type on) or software (on a touch screen, like you'll find on the iPhone). Messaging: The advance features of receiving and sending e-mails and instant messaging, have contributed a lot in the success of Smartphones. It can also sync with your personal and professional e-mail accounts. Our mobile phones used to have the feature of SMS, but the advance feature of instant messaging like BlackBerry Messenger, What’s up, Samsung Chat Messenger, etc. have given smart phones an additional edge over regular mobile phones. These features that we discussed above are just some of the features that make a smart phone has and those that makes a regular phone, a smart phone. Although, the technology, that surrounds smart phones and cell phones, is constantly changing. What forms a smart phone today may change in near or far future.
