The concept of having a ‘snoratorium’at home seems to be the most convenient way to solve snoring problems for the Hollywood rich and famous. Such private chambers are designed to be used exclusively by habitual snorers who can use them to snore as much as they want, without disturbing the other occupants of the house. Whether snoring should be left undiagnosed and untreated is a debatable issue, but the moot point here is that not many of us can afford to build such homes with separate facilities for snorers. Any health-conscious individual would raise objections to such an unhealthy practice. After all, many of us know that snoring should be controlled early, before it takes an ugly turn, a very likely fallout. Scores of people are looking out for effective means to cure their snoring; but not many are able to end the search fruitfully. What makes finding snoring solutions so difficult? The following could be the reasons: • Even loud and persistent snoring tends to get ignored by most people. Lack of awareness about the conse1uencs of such neglect is not known. Neglected snoring easily worsens into a completely disabling sleep disorder called sleep apnea. • Most people would like to believe that there ought to be a universal snoring remedy that can cure everyone. They are very wrong. The only way to crack the tough nut Perhaps the only effective and result-oriented approach to cure snoring is to find out the cause of the problem. Incidentally, there are plenty of reasons why people end up snoring, but unless a remedy is found that addresses a specific cause, the search and application of solutions would be completely futile. Reasons for snoring Why do people snore? Nasal blockage leading to oral breathing is the prime reason behind snoring. During mouth breathing, muscles of the tongue, throat, soft palate and uvula could collapse causing distressful breathing. Such muscles may also vibrate during sleep resulting in the snoring noise. What causes nasal blockage? There are several factors that result in blockage of the nasal airway: • Obesity impacts not just the body but the breathing muscles as well. • Incorrect sleeping position (too much on the back) • Excessive consumption of alcohol and tobaccorn• Low pillow heightrn• Cold and allergiesrn• Enlarged tissues in the nasal cavityrn• Enlarged nasal turbinatesrn• Anatomical defects like deviated septum, misalignment of jaw, crooked bone at the bridge of the nose, enlarged tonguern• Polypsrn• Congestion. Cutting down on search time for snoring remedies One can easily cut down on the time spent on searching for snoring remedies if you can first look for the most likely reason for you to snore. The most important part of snoring solutions is that they work only when they can address the specific cause for which they were designed. If obesity is the reason behind your snoring problems, immediate weight loss is the most likely solution. If deviated septum is the culprit, the solution could be surgery to rectify septal deviation.
