Thrissur is a beautiful city of Kerala. Famous for its temple festivals, the city reflects the rich culture and traditions of South India. Major Tourist Attractions rnThe tourist attractions in Thrissur encompass monuments, museums, cultural centres, water theme parks, zoos, pilgrim spots and amusements parks. Some famous ones include: Kerala State Museum rnSituated on Town Hall Road in Chembukavu, which is just 2 km away form Thrissur Railway Station, it is a popular museum. Established in 1885, it was sprawled over 5. 5 hectors of land. The museum complex houses an art section with a beautiful collection of religious statues, sculptures, traditional jewellery, Kathakali figures and traditional lamps. Thrissur ZoornLying adjacent to the Art Museum, the zoo is a famous tourist attraction. Tourists can see here various wildlife species like lions, tigers, sloth bear, tailed macaque and deers. The zoo also houses many snakes like Pythons, King Cobras, Kraits, Rat Snakes and Vipers. Except Mondays, the visitor timings include 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. Basilica of Our Lady of DoloursrnBuilt in 1875, this Roman Catholic Minor Basilica is locally known as Puthen Palli. You can see 140 ft long steeple from anywhere in the town. The chapel houses 15 altars. It also boasts of neo-Gothic spires. Known for its largest interior, the church has been adorned with many mural paintings on its walls and ceilings. Vadakkumnathan Temple rnBelieved to be founded by Parasurama, this temple is a classic example of Kerala architectural style. With beautiful murals of 17th century, the temples also houses few holy shrines. People believe that Adi Shankara, a great personality spent his last days here. This 2000 years old temple also serves as the main venue for the famous Thrissur Pooram festival. Thrissur Pooram or Elephant Festival rnIt is the most popular and colourful temple festival of Kerala. Celebrated in Medom (April-May), the festival comprises of the grand processions or beautifully decorated elephants from neighboring temples to Vadakkumnathan temple. Other Important InformationrnThe best time to visit Thrissur is from October to March as it is the ideal time to escape the summer heat as well as humidity. Thrissur is also well linked to the major parts of the country. Cochin International airport is the nearest airport while the city has its own railway station. Many buses are available from different parts of the state as well as neighboring areas for Thrissur.
