Students who aspire to be professional teachers of English as a Foreign Language seek to earn teaching certificates from accredited TEFL courses. Such certificates verify to TEFL employers worldwide that these students have the skills to effectively teach English as a foreign language. Students whose certifications come from courses that are not soundly accredited face a reduction in international employment opportunities. The World TEFL Accreditation Commission (wteflac) is among the foremost TEFL course accreditation organizations whose accreditation is generally recognized internationally. The respect for wteflac accreditation stems from their solid code of practice. These guidelines govern all TEFL accredited courses that hold the commission’s accreditation. The code is thorough and comprehensive, attending to every aspect of TEFL course quality assurance. The commission’s code of practice governs all areas of course development and delivery, from promotion to evaluation. Admission, content, staff development, and assessment are all carefully attended to in the code. To begin with, the commission requires that advertisement and promotion of accredited courses be accurate in their representation of each individual course. Course content, schedules, modules, and fees must all be readily supplied to prospective students, allowing them to knowledgeably determine how the course might meet their individual needs. Accredited courses must also provide a clear admissions policy to prospective students and ensure that admission practices provide for equal opportunity while also requiring English language competence. The delivery of any accredited course must follow established methodological principles and involve significant peer to peer teaching. Courses can only be taught by English foreign language professionals who have, at minimum, three years of practical teaching experience. The content of any wteflac accredited course must offer a solid knowledge base to students, incorporate sequentially progressive modules, and proceed through content at a reasonable pace. The World TEFL Accreditation Commission also requires its accredited courses to provide assessment methods and policies that are easily understood and which assess students in a comprehensive manner. Course administrators must ensure that students have ready access to performance feedback at all times during their course of study, and that student’s who successfully pass the TEFL course receive an official certificate of completion. All teaching staff must be sufficiently qualified to teach the course and adequately trained to do so. Teaching staff must also have access to sufficient teaching resources to ensure quality course delivery. All World TEFL Accreditation Commission courses must actively employ prescribed course delivery standards as well as ongoing course evaluation. Quality evaluations are to be carried out by independent authorities to verify all standards are adequately met. Quality and improvement are to be monitored on an ongoing basis. This code of ethics astutely sets wteflac accredited courses apart. Firm adherence to this code has led to international recognition of completion certificates from TEFL courses that are accredited by the World TEFL Accreditation Commission.
