Sony Rumored to "See" a New Era For Gaming

Contact lenses have become a way of life for many people, particularly for those individuals who need their vision enhanced but don't like to wear glasses. More than that, contacts have also become a huge part of costume design, not only for small Halloween costumes, but for full blow
Hollywood movies as well.

Now, if the rumors are indeed true, it seems that contact lenses are going to be used for a completely different industry: gaming.

Several reports have recently indicated that the still-under-development Playstation 4 may feature cutting edge contact lens technology. Fairly reliable sources have said that a patent from Sony (developers of Playstation consoles) leads many to believe that the company is working on contact lenses that will track the movements of the players' eyes.

These reports go on to claim that simply blinking will walk you through control menus and the eye movements of a player can direct the action on the screen. It is also suggested that such an approach would provide a whole new level of virtual reality and interactive gaming. Some believe these magnetic contact lenses could also be capable of 3D games and functions.

Whether or not there would be additional gear such as headsets or upper body apparel to enhance the lenses feature remains unclear.

Naturally, this raises concerns for eye doctors. They point out that even if such contact lenses could be proven 100% safe, there are other things to take into consideration. First of all, for the hardcore gamers that play for hours and hours on end, wearing contacts for that long uninterrupted can cause cloudiness in their vision, as well as other ailments such as red eyes and severe dryness.

While Sony has yet to confirm or deny these reports, the news of this supposed contact lens-driven playing method is being hotly debated. There must be concerns about younger patients that tend to play games for extended periods of times. If such a system actually does come to fruition, eye doctors will have to be more intentional about warning patients about risks involved in wearing contact lenses when they are not necessary to aiding one's vision.

Again, we stress that this is simply a rumor at this point and nothing has been 100% confirmed. Still, it raises issues that eye doctors have always dealt with in terms of contact lenses.
