Sea food has always been a part of human diet. Even in the past, our ancestors eat fish and other sea food and have remained healthy all throughout their lives.
Sea foods are generally healthy and full of nutrients that our body needs. They are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids and a lot more compared to meat that we also love to eat. Seafood is low in fat and is considered a food for the brain and heart because of the omega 3fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) that sea foods contain. The omega 3 fatty acids are present in most fatty fishes and some dietary supplements have been created to serve as natural dietary pill.
That is how healthy and important seafood is on our diet. We should make it a habit to prepare seafood recipes and natural spices to make it more tasty and flavorful. There are spices that have existed since the 16th century and up to now being used to make more delightful seafood recipes.
Professional chefs agree that the secret to having a mouth-watering dish besides having fresh meat and high quality ingredients is the different spices used. Spices can make your dish more exciting to eat because of the distinct taste it can give.

Pimenta dioica and Pimenta officinalis are the common plants where the Jamaica pepper comes from. Jamaica pepper is commonly known as Allspice which is one of the known seafood spices in Mexico, Central and South America. Allspice became popular because its unique smell which is a combination of ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves, perfect for seafood dishes. It is made of dried unripe berries of the pimento plant.
Chives come from the family of edible onion but with a mild flavor. These are long thin leaves with a length of six (6) to twenty (20) inches and a native plant that can be found in North America, Europe and Asia. It is usually used in garnishing dishes and is suggested to be added to a recipe at the last few minutes of cooking because chives easily lose its taste.
Garlic which is the common spice used in different dishes is known for its strong aroma and spicy taste. It is best added in making sauces for fish recipes. Garlic also comes from the onion family which is largely known from its health benefits. If you try to research for the health benefits of garlic, then you would be surprise of the many benefits and advantages you can get from eating or adding garlic to your dishes.
Basil is another spice that is known in some English-speaking countries as Saint Joseph’s Wort. It has a minty flavor when dried and mild sweet flavor when fresh. This culinary herb originated from India, basil come from different variety plants like purple, lemon etc. and can add more flavor to your seafood dish.
Cayenne Pepper gives a hot and spicy flavor to seafood dishes and even in other recipes. In other countries, they are commonly known as the Guniea Spice. It is considered by many as the prince of medicinal herbs because of its many health benefits. This is available in the market as dried or ground.
