Degenerative spine disorder occurs due to stress and tension on the intervertebral discs. There are various types of degenerative spine diseases. Spinal Stenosis is one the most common spinal disease in human.

Spinal Stenosis is a condition in which the spinal column narrows and starts compressing the spinal cord slowly. This compression affects the nerve and causes pain. It can occur anywhere along the spine.

Spinal Stenosis is also called as:

1) Pseudo-claudication
2) Central spinal stenosis
3) Foraminal spinal stenosis

Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis:

1) Weakness in leg or arm
2) Lower back pain while standing or walking
3) Numbness in leg or buttocks
4) Balance problem

Causes of Spinal Stenosis:

The most common cause of spinal stenosis is aging. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis also cause spinal stenosis.
Other conditions that can cause spinal stenosis include:

1) Spine defects at birth
2) Naturally narrow spinal cord
3) Spinal curvature or Scoliosis
4) Bone tumors
5) Abnormal bone growth and destructio

Spinal Stenosis diagnosis:

1) X-ray, MRI scan or CT scan tests to view image of spine.
2) Electromyelogram to check health of spine nerves.
3) Bone scan to detect damage or growth of spine.

Treatment options for spinal stenosis:

1) Non-Surgical treatment-

Doctor first of all starts Non surgical treatment to relive pain. Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs also help to reduce pain. Physical therapy increases the muscle strength.

2) Surgery-

If there is neurological loss or severe pain, then doctor decides surgery treatment to cure spinal stenosis.

  • Laminectomy : It is the most common type of surgery. In this surgery, surgeon removes part of vertebrae to provide more room for nerves.
  • Foraminotomy : In this surgery part of spine is widened.
  • Spinal Fusion: In this surgery bone grafts or metal implants are used to attach the affected bones of the spine.

Most of the people live normal life after Spinal Stenosis surgery. They can perform daily activities more efficiently than before.
