Do you have a child who has an imaginary friend?

Did you ever wonder if the friend was really made up, or if maybe your child is seeing something that you can't?

I never really thought much about it until my mother died, and my sister had my nephew a year and a half later.

My sister and I went to a medium, Concetta Bertoldi in Booton, N.J., (she has a great book called, "Do Dead People Watch You Shower?) who said my mother wanted us to know she visited my nephew at night, and if we allowed him to know it was OK, and didn't discourage him, he would tell us when she was there.

A couple of months after the session, my almost two-year old nephew was at my parents house with my sister and I while we were redecorating the living room for my dad as a surprise father's day gift. Suddenly he flipped open my sister's wedding album and started pointing to my mother's picture.

My sister and I exchanged glances, and started asking him questions.
"Who is that?" we asked. "Mumma," he answered. "Do you know her?" we asked, and he said "yes."

We thought it was interesting, but continued hanging curtains. However, my nephew was persistent. He continued to point to the picture and say, "Mumma," and finally my sister and I said, "Is she here now?" and he said "yes" in almost an annoyed fashion (like finally you two got it!) and then walked away and went back to his playing.

That was the beginning of communication between us and my mother. He continued for years to tell my sister when he was going to bed that our mother was in the room. He would give her messages, such as "your mom said she sat with you last night because she knew you didn't feel well." My sister would start to cry and ask, "Does she know I love her?" and my nephew would say, "Of course. She is right there mom Why don't you just tell he?"

My sister explained to him she couldn't see her, but it was OK that he could. He also began to talk about our grandparents who had passed, and aunts as well. Many of these people he would describe or name died before he was born.

My nephew is now 7 years old, and the communication has slowed, but I think because we encouraged him, every now and then my mother still shows up. A couple of months ago, he saw her in the doorway to his room, "wearing a pink shirt," he said.

In our December issue, featuring Dr. Wayne Dyer as the cover story, Dr. Laurie A

Levin, founder and owner of Moonview Sanctuary in Santa Monica, Calif. contributed a column called "So Fresh From Heaven," about how children are still so connected because they just arrived in this physical world "fresh from heaven," and what we can learn from them. Babies who stare into space and laugh at what seems to be thin air, and yes, even your child's imaginary friend, are just two examples she offers in the article.

Dr. Levin is a gifted medium, who has a lot to share about the concept she calls Soul Communion. In fact, her first book will be released this October. I hope you all get a chance to read her column, packed with research and scientific evidence to back up all she talks about. Dr. Levin is now a regular contributing editor in Elevated Existence Magazine.

Interestingly enough, my niece who will be four years old soon, has an imaginary friend. And started talking about someone she calls "my Maryann." That's my mom's name, and no, we never told her that. She tells us Maryann visits her at night and sits on her bed. And once when my sister was driving, my niece said "Your mom is following us in the car," and she asked, "Do you miss her?"

I assure you we do miss her, but I am thankful our openness to the possiblity of communication allowed us to share these experiences. Even now, almost 10 years after my mother's passing, the reassurance she is close by helps a lot.

Do any of you have similar experiences? Make sure you add a comment. I would love to hear them! And pay attention next time your child talks about their imaginary friend. They may not be so imaginary! They may even be someone you once knew!
