If you suffer from anxiety it is important to understand that there are steps to cope with anxiety which can help you. The first step in coping with anxiety is to separate real danger from situations which may seem stressful but which are not really harmful to you. Then concentrate on changing those things which you have some control over. Keep in mind that you may not be able to change certain things about your life or situation but there will be some things which you can take positive action toward. nnIt is also important to understand the impact negative thoughts can have on your life. Many times, negative thoughts can directly lead to increased anxiety. This is why it is important to challenge those negative thoughts wherever possible in order to prevent them from having such an impact. When you recognize that you are having negative thoughts, tell yourself to stop. Do not dwell on those negative thoughts. It necessary, distract yourself with other thoughts or activities. You may find it helpful to carry a book of relaxing poetry with you or to listen to some calming music when you begin to experience negative and anxious thoughts. Taking a walk or talking to friend can also help to redirect such thoughts. nnLearning to relax also ranks as one of the steps to cope with anxiety. While it may sound simple enough to relax, many people actually do find it to be quite difficult. If you fall into that category, you may need to make a more concentrated effort to relax. Consider meditation, yoga or even exercising as a way to help you relax. If you’re not fond of exercise, consider a group activity that will allow you to relax and enjoy yourself while also getting important physical activity. nnRemember too that there is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking help to cope with your anxiety if you feel that you need it. Everyone needs help from time to time. Speaking with a therapist or counselor may help you to understand factors in your life that could be contributing to your anxiety. nnIn addition, it is important to speak with a health professional to make sure you are not suffering more than one condition. Many individuals who suffer from anxiety also frequently suffer from depression as well. It is critical that you make sure you understand the full scope of your anxiety. nnIf speaking with a therapist is not possible for whatever reason, at least consider joining a support group. Today it is even possible to join online support groups. This will give you the support you need from others who are going through the same experiences with anxiety as you. nnAnxiety is certainly difficult to live with and can have a tremendous impact on one’s life.
