Organizations need to calibrate the performance of their employees so that it becomes possible to create a uniform, thoughtful and well-communicated plan. HRs are responsible for shaping the review process that allows managers to evaluate the performance of employees effectively. Handling poor performance is one of the biggest challenges for a manager. In some situations, it has been noticed that even after lots of efforts the employees’ performance is still called into question. Or the employee needs help fulfilling their goals. An effective performance improvement plan is needed to eliminate these problems. These plans are action-based guides that are formed to precisely outline steps that employees should take to meet the organizational goals, make required changes, and improve behaviour. While making the improvement plan, HRs and managers should make sure that the improvement plan of two employees should not be the same. So, some steps will help in creating stellar performance improvement plans.

Step 1 - Identify the issue

Before starting the planning process, it is essential to ensure that managers and HRs are well-aware of problems that are the reason behind low or poor performance. Know if there is any training left or the employee is dealing with any health or family issues.

Step 2 - Include the employee

Before buying any improvement plan, sit with the employees and discuss the concerns and changes they want. Allow employees to add their point of view and be open to ideas based on employees’ needs to improve their performance.

Step 3 - Establish clear objectives

There should be a clear objective for implementing any performance improvement plan. Employees should have a clear understanding of what they have to do when they have to complete the task and how it will be measured or reviewed. All targets and objects set for employees should be realistic and should be performed within the given time.

Step 4 - Arrange training and support sessions

One of the major causes behind the poor performance can be the lack of training. Sometimes employees are not well-equipped to handle the task and still work on projects from the first day. Or in some cases, the role of the employee might have changed, and the employee is working in an area that is new for him/her.

Step 5 - Keep reviewing the progress

It is of utmost importance to track and review the progress frequently. Make a fixed schedule and rewire employees progress and make a document. This document will help you in checking the progress of employees as well as the project. Also, you will have data of what’s been discussed and agreed upon. As we know, it is not possible to conduct physical meets and keep a record of everything because of this pandemic. So, organizations have switched to online platforms like entomo that is an all-in-one employee management software. Using these applications makes it easy to record the ongoing, previous, and upcoming projects. Helps in employee engagement, performance management, goal alignment and more.
