Stop Being Shy Around Boys

If you want to talk to boys but are really, really shy about doing it, here are some quick tips that you can try that will help you overcome your shyness and give you enough courage to approach a boy and have a conversation for the first time.

1. Get involved in social groups – Clubs and societies are where people with similar interests meet to do things they like to do. By getting involved in a club that you’re interested in, you will naturally find people that have something in common with you.

2. Get your friends to help you – It can be confronting to go up and talk to somebody yourself, and your friends are often very willing to help you make the first move. They can lead the conversation and you can be there just to say a thing or two.

If you do use your friends to help break the ice, tell them that you want to make it easy-going and friendly; just a nice, quick chat. You don’t want your friends to start match-making for you or put pressure on any of the boys to talk.

3. Break the ice online – almost everybody has a Facebook account or another type of social media account. If you can get in touch with a boy you would like to talk to online, it can break the ice between you really well and make it much easier to speak in person.

4. Only say one or two things – It’s not important to hold a long conversation when you first speak to somebody. We fantasize about speaking for hours right from the very first time we meet, but this is not how it works in the real world. All you need to do in your first conversation is to say one or two things to each other. It’s actually not much of a conversation at all, just a few quick questions and answers. Your conversations will get longer naturally as you begin to speak more often.

5. Don’t beat yourself up – You might be very nervous, you might stumble as you talk, what you say might not come out the way you had hoped. It’s part of being human and part of learning how to speak to new people. Don’t beat yourself up. It happens to everybody. The next time you speak to him it won’t be that way. Besides, he will be flattered by the fact that you overcame your courage and made the effort to approach him and start a conversation.
