There are many reasons to stop smoking. Everyone has heard a few, and every year there's more pressure to quit. Aside from the social stigma and the rising expense, the main reasons people want to give up the habit is their health. What health benefits can a person expect when they quit smoking? The health effects are long lasting, but even some of the worst fade over time. If a smoker can quit for as long as ten or fifteen years, their risk of heart disease is nearly the same as if they had never smoked. The ill effects of smoking on your circulatory system are serious, but it is comforting to know that you can regain your health. It will take more than ten years for your risk of heart disease to decrease to the point where it would be if you had never smoked, but every year decreases your risk. Because of its effects on your body, just one day of smoking slightly increases your risk of heart attack. Even if its effects couldn't be measured by a statistician, a day without cigarettes could only stand to help your body. Stroke is another vascular malfunction that can be brought on by tobacco use. But in contrast to the more lingering effects on your risk of heart disease, the risk of stroke decreases rapidly over a few years of abstinence. In just five years, you will be no more likely to have a stroke than if you had never smoked. Don't forget that vascular problems are some of the most long-lived consequences. These are macro-effects. They are seen only in aggregate. On a more personal level, there are perceptible improvements in health. Newly minted non-smokers feel less fatigue and may notice an improvement in breathing. During the first months of abstinence, they may notice that chronic coughs and sinus problems fade away. One reason for this is that the microscopic hairs that keep your lungs clear begin to heal when they are no longer being assaulted with toxic smoke. All of these things are nice to look forward to if you take the long view. If you found yourself tempted to "have just one" after a long time without, reminding yourself of how far you'd come might prevent you from relapsing. But the hardest part of becoming a non-smoker is the first couple days, when your body still craves nicotine. In as little as twenty four hours, the sense of taste improves as nerve cells responsible for smell begin to recover. The carbon monoxide that saturated the bloodstream begins to dissipate, allowing a return to regular levels of oxygenation. The pule slows back to normal. Even just twenty minutes after the last cigarette, improvements in circulation are detectable and the blood pressure returns to baseline. Every day that someone goes without using tobacco, they are a little better off, health wise. You can set your sights on the long term, when you can look forward to improved heart health, or you can motivate yourself by thinking about the immediate improvement in your circulation. Quitting is a very hard thing to do, and everyone needs to find their own reasons to stop smoking.
