As you most likely know, social bookmarking as a marketing and backlinking strategy has existed for a few years. There appears to be no let-up with their reputation, especially for off-page SEO purposes. Yet the smarter IM businesses will use particular bookmark sites as they are intended to be used which is also a strategy for continued growth and development. So it all just is dependent upon what you want to do in your business. Yes, bookmarks can be stored in your account at bookmarking sites, even though they have become social centers for lots of people. Some bookmarking sites have more SEO power than others which has an influence when you use bookmarking tags. Several years ago the more popular bookmark sites made all their links to nofollow which had a huge impact on bookmark rankings. Seems people were able to rank highly from sites like Digg and a few others. Naturally, I make conjecture about any influence Google had with those changing their links to nofollow. But I wouldn't be surprised if that took place. Make no mistake about what is possible at high PR bookmarking sites when you take a different approach with them. Mass backlinking profiles at bookmark sites are renowned for being just about worthless and even spammy. What you can do is simply write better profiles that at the very least look like they're for real. They have discovered that the more 'full bodied' profiles do not get removed and have a longer shelf life. Plus, when you do this you are adding something to the site, and you can keep high quality bookmark profiles for years. Also consider your ability to use the RSS feed capabilities available with a meaty profile with good content in it. You can market your RSS feed at other places and RSS directories. You can include your various links plus precise content in your feeds, too. Nonetheless, you do not want to annoy any feed subscribers by including too many links throughout the content. There's a balance that you have to keep with the amount of content and various promotional methods in your feeds. Another important aspect is to take time and build relationships at these bookmark sites. It is not necessary to spend time building relationships and getting known, but it doesn't have to be totally time consuming. In the end, how you approach using bookmarking sites in your own business is your call. The truth is a lot of IM marketers do not want to spend time with long-term strategic approaches. Perhaps you can try it at just one powerful bookmarking site and see how you prefer the results.
