Statistically, young drivers are at higher risk of geting into an accident. Just a quick look at very recent accounts of motor vehicle accidents demonstrates that a number of these accidents involved teen drivers. Many of these incidents involve pedestrian victims. In this article we look at 4 reported accidents. In three of the cases someone was killed.
In this report a motor vehicle accident was described in which the vehicle was driven by a 16 year old who has a junior license which let the teenager to drive up to 9:00 pm. The incident, though, happened on a weekday at a time later than 9:00 p.m. The driver lost control of his car, hit another car, and then slammed into a 65 year-old male pedestrian who was waiting at a bus stop. The victim died from his injuries a short time after being hit. The driver survived the accident with only minor injuries. He was arrested and charged with speeding, manslaughter, and criminally negligent homicide.
In this report the driver of the motor vehicle was a drunk eighteen year old male. The motor vehicle accident took place before dawn on a Sunday. Most drunk driving accidents happen on weekend nights. The driver hit a male pedestrian, forty four years of age, who was crossing a road. The impact caused the pedestrian to endure severe head injuries. The driver was arrested. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving under the influence.
This accident involved an 18 year-old male driving in a residential area at about 8:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning. The accident occurred when the teenaged driver lost control of his car. The car spun violently before it flipped over, hit the victim and struck a large tree in front of the house. The victim had just gotten out of his car to grab a pamphlet from the front yard on a home which had a For Sale sign when he was struck by an out of control car. The pedestrian died as a result of his injuries. He was sixty seven years old.
In this report the account was of a nineteen year old driver. The young woman was driving in a residential area. The driver struck a woman who was in front of her house tending to her flower bed. The car hit her with such force that the woman was thrown nearly one hundred fifty feet into a truck parked in her driveway. The teenaged driver did not stop at the scene of the accident. About 30 minutes after the accident the police found the young driver and placed her under arrest. They located her not far from the scene of the accident. She stated she was heading back to the scene to admit she had caused the accident.
Every time I read a report of a new accident my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. Lives are ruined in them. Victims can die or sustain significant injuries. Some are left with permanent disabilities. The families of the victims also suffer a great loss. Even the teenage driver’s life is changed forever. Sometimes they suffer the rest of their lives from the knowledge of what they did. Sometimes they are incarcirated. Yet, be it from speeding or from drunk driving these accidents keep happening.
