Summer Solstice is the longest day and shortest night. It is the turning point on the earth’s journey around the sun where we, in the northern hemisphere, are leaning in towards the light.
Druids celebrated this as the wedding of heaven and earth, and at Stonehenge thousands gather to welcome the sunrise.
Weddings were often performed on the first moon after midsummer. Mead made from fermented honey was served at the celebration and this is the derivative of the word honeymoon.
The solstice was thought to be a time of magic, when spirits could appear to humans. This is the legend that Shakespeare brought to life in his play Midsummer’s Night dream. In his play, humans drink a potion that makes them fall in love with animals and inappropriate partners. This is not difficult to believe.
