Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be a debilitating, self-conscious disorder that can encumber your life. If you are diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood, then more than likely you have had ADHD all your life. Either you coped with your symptoms throughout childhood or you were misdiagnosed or labeled by your parents and teachers. Either way, as an adult, it is almost impossible to deal with the symptoms of ADHD on your own. Once diagnosed self-help techniques can manage and structure you life to minimize the symptoms that you experience. However, if self-help doesn’t work, or you are still having problems with your relationships, work, financial, physical or mental health then its time to seek additional support. Most often than not people who suffer from ADHD use one, some or all forms of outside support to help manage their life and the symptoms they experience. By seeking support from behavioral counseling, individual therapists, self-help groups, educational assistance, or even through medication you can cope with the daily stress and maintain control of your life.
Not everyone with ADHD will benefit from the same forms of support and treatment. Developing a system that works best for each individual is the best process. Treatments should include professionals, family members, and partners/spouses. By including the help of professionals in your treatment you can control impulsive behaviors, manage your time and money, get organized, boost productivity, manage stress, and communicate more clearly. Some of the treatment types include talk therapy, marriage or family therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, support groups, behavioral coaching, and professional organizers.
Talk therapy should be conducted with a licensed psychologist or therapist. Talk therapy can be helpful for emotional issues as well as practical day-to-day issues. The patient can talk about issues that stem from childhood throughout adulthood. For people who suffer with ADHD feelings of underachievement, failure, difficulty and conflict are normal topics of discussion. This is a place to deal with emotional baggage such as feelings of embarrassment, low self-esteem, shame, resentment, and criticism. During this time you can learn ways to deal with these feelings and develop techniques to build your self esteem.
Family and marriage therapy is exactly like talk therapy but it allows the family members and spouses to be present. During this time you can address problems that ADHD creates in your relationships. You can explore your feelings towards your family and friends and how they have made you feel. You can focus on ways to deal with these problems and how to communicate with your family outside of the therapist’s office. It will not only educate your family and friends but also divulge information that your family may have never known otherwise. It will vastly improve your relationships.
For most people who live with ADHD, your outlook on life due to your symptoms is negative. They have had to grow up with feelings of embarrassment, shame, resentment and low self-esteem. Cognitive behavioral therapy takes these negative thoughts, feeling sand emotions and transforms them into more hopeful, realistic points of view. By identifying the negative beliefs and behaviors you can solve your problems with goal-oriented, systematic procedure.
Finding a support group in your area is one of the best ways to find encouragement with your disorder. You no longer feel isolated by your symptoms knowing that others just like you deal with the exact same thing on a daily basis. You can express your feelings and emotions knowing that you will be accepted and understood. This is also a place where you can find encouragement, support and strategies that are successful.
Behavioral coaches and professional organizers although helpful should not replace a licensed therapist. Both can be valuable supplements to therapy and medication but should be just that supplements. Behavioral coaches can focus on practical solutions to everyday life problems. They can teach strategies to organize your home, work, money and daily schedule. They can help in prioritizing, motivation, time management and procrastination. Professional organizers help to organize your life through time and with your belongings. This reduces stress, and organizes your life. They can help teach you how to stay organized by creating a schedule. A system can help keep your paperwork filed and bills paid. This will keep your work streamlined keeping you on task and on schedule.
